Wales has some 4,000 beekeepers and some 20,000 colonies of a total of 274,000 in the rest of the UK. Therefore, the fact that beekeepers, who normally expect losses of about 5 per cent, opened up their hives in the last year to find a third of them empty has huge implications for agriculture and the environment, especially since the colony collapse disorder that is spreading elsewhere in the world has not yet reached Britain.
