The price of hazelnuts has for many consecutive months now fallen below the 86‐88 average price, and there is a threat of a further slump in prices to far below the 86‐88 average, thanks to the new, non-interventionist policy of the Turkish Government, and the existence of 550 000 tonnes of hazelnuts being held in store by the Turkish Public Purchase Body (TMO), which could be released from January 2010, according to information published by the Turkish authorities at their bilateral meeting with the European Union on 2 October 2009.
