In the interim, MERCOSUR and the associated States had undertaken to adopt measures aimed at preventing vessels flying the illegal flag of the Malvinas Islands from entering their ports, and to exchange information on vessels bound for the Malvinas Islands, South Georgia Islands and South Sandwich Islands with cargo intended for illegal drilling operations on the Argentine continental shelf.

As reflected in the official record of the meeting of the General Assembly, on 25 September 2007 (A/62/PV.5), the President of Argentina, Néstor Kirchner, in his address to the General Assembly, inter alia flagged the continuing importance to Argentina of the question of the Falkland Islands (Malvinas), including South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, as well as the maritime areas surrounding those islands:
Como consta en el acta oficial de la sesión de la Asamblea General, el 25 de septiembre de 2007 (A/62/PV.5) el Presidente de la Argentina, Sr. Néstor Kirchner, en el discurso pronunciado ante la Asamblea General, entre otras cosas subrayó la importancia permanente que para la Argentina tiene la cuestión de las Islas Malvinas (Islas Falkland), incluidas las Islas Georgias del Sur y las Islas Sandwich del Sur, al igual que los espacios marítimos circundantes:

UNASUR, MERCOSUR and ALBA have decided, among other supportive measures, to close their ports to any vessel flying the illegal “flag” of the islands and to exchange information concerning any vessels or marine structures travelling to the Malvinas Islands, South Georgia Islands and South Sandwich Islands with cargo to be used for illegal hydrocarbon and/or mining activities on the Argentine continental shelf and thus prevent the consolidation of these activities.

They had also undertaken to take all appropriate regulatory measures to prevent the entry into their ports of vessels flying the illegal flag of the Malvinas Islands, and to inform the Argentine Government about any vessels or marine structures travelling to the Malvinas Islands, South Georgia Islands or South Sandwich Islands with cargo to be used for illegal oil and gas exploration and/or mining activities on the Argentine continental shelf.

Most recently, the Presidents of MERCOSUR States parties and associated States, in a special communiqué issued in Paraná on 17 December 2014, reaffirmed their commitment to exchanging available information concerning any vessels or marine structures travelling to the Malvinas Islands, South Georgia Islands and South Sandwich Islands with cargo to be used for illegal hydrocarbon and/or mining activities on the Argentine continental shelf and the adoption of appropriate regulatory measures to prevent the entry into their ports of vessels or marine structures flying the illegal flag of the Malvinas Islands (see A/69/775, annex).
