Cytochemical and ultrastructural changes found in all diabetics consisted in: glycogen overloading of liver cell cytoplasm and nuclei, alkaline phosphatase activity in the nuclear membrane, mitochondrial changes, hypertrophy of Kupffer cell cytoplasm with excess lipid, reduction of liver cell microvilli in Disse’s spaces, deep invaginations in liver cell plasma membranes and appearance of a discontinuous basement membrane in the subsinusoidal space.
