The indomitable Arnold Palmer was the inaugural winner back in 1964 and since then the World Match Play champions’ roll-call has included the finest players in the contemporary era. In the early years of the tournament, they also were five-times winner Gary Player, Bob Charles, Jack Nicklaus (who defeated Lee Trevino in the 1970 final), Tom Weiskopf, Hale Irwin, David Graham, Graham Marsh, Isao Aoki and Bill Rogers.
