Although the most familiar Eurasian lapwing, Vanellus vanellus (northern lapwing), has a wispy crest, only two other species do so.

35 Moreover, as the Commission has maintained, without being contradicted on this point either, in 2001 there were likewise large numbers of migratory common snipe (Gallinago gallinago), Northern lapwings (Vanellus vanellus) and Eurasian curlews (Numenius arquata) breeding in the two sites not designated as SPAs by the Austrian authorities.

The figures, which the Austrian Government does not dispute, do show, however, that as far as the corncrake, common snipe, Northern lapwing and Eurasian curlew are concerned the ‘Soren’ and ‘Gleggen-Köblern’ sites are of an importance comparable to, and in some respects even greater than, that of the territory within the SPA.
