There are three types of soil which are well-suited to the planting of vines: brown clay-limestone soils on the limestone substrate; leached sandy-loam soils (known as ‘boulbènes’) resulting from wind-blown silt depositing on the ‘sand, clay and gravel of the Périgord’; and alluvial gravel, clay, sand and loam soils of various proportions corresponding to the ancient and more recent river terraces.
