On 20 August 1998 the Sicilian Regional Assembly passed a law on the protection of wild fauna and and on hunting, the provisions of which infringe Italy's national legislation and Constitution. In including among the species that may be hunted the rock partridge (Sicilian subspecies), the law also infringes a specific European directive, 79/409/EEC(1) and successive amendments to the latter, which lists the bird in Annex I of species for special protection at European level. In view of the foregoing, what steps does the Commission intend to take to ensure that the law - and European directives -are upheld?
