In parallel, ALKs dedicated research and development has shown that allergy immunotherapy addresses the underlying cause of the allergy rather than just treating the symptoms and that it potentially prevents the development of asthma.
ALK on viime vuosina yhdessä kansainvälisten yhteistyökumppaneidensa kanssa investoinut voimakkaasti uusien näyttöön perustuvien tablettimuotoisten siedätyshoitojen tutkimiseen ja kehittämiseen yleisimpien hengitystieallergioiden hoitoon. Yleisimpien hengitystieallergioiden aiheuttajat ovat huonepölypunkki, heinän siitepöly, koivun ja vastaavien puiden siitepöly, tuoksukkien siitepöly sekä japaninsetrin siitepöly (merkittävä allergian aiheuttaja Japanissa). Samalla ALK:n määrätietoinen tutkimus- ja kehitystyö on osoittanut, että siedätyshoito kohdistuu allergian varsinaiseen syyhyn pelkän oirelievityksen sijaan, ja että siedätyshoidolla voidaan myös ehkäistä astman kehittymistä.
