Commonly distinguished types are: fibrous lignites whose fracture is reminiscent of the fibrous appearance of the original wood and which have a high moisture content (up to 50 %); common, or earthy, lignites, brown or black, containing less water than the fibrous type (approximately 15 %) and exhibiting an earthy fracture; bituminous, fat, lignites, which soften when heated and are therefore very suitable for briquetting; waxy lignites, which have a wax-like fracture and a high wax content.
