Preliminary studies, says Science News, have revealed that oil from these citrus peels “killed all insects tested —fire ants, houseflies, stable flies, black soldier flies, paper wasps and grey crickets.”
And in the southwestern United States and northern South America, reports The Times, certain fire ants “move up through the nests to ground level, form large masses that include adults, the queen and her brood, and float on the rising waters.
Additionally, without freezing winter temperatures, pests like fire ants, killer bees, fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes will thrive, and with them so will Lyme disease, malaria, and West Nile Virus.
In the face of such natural selection, the lizard population is now better adapted to maintain a presence in fire ant areas.12 Note: no new genetic information, therefore no evolution.
Next up is a course of Fire Ants on a Log (celery with peanut butter and dried cranberries), followed by berries, homemade scones and crumpets, and an assortment of petite desserts.
