I’ve actually really struggled to write about this. I went, and I said I would write about it, and then I’ve struggled to come up with anything coherent. I’m not naïve to police violence. I was at the student protests in 2010 about tuition fees. I also know how Devon and Cornwall police treat fox hunts versus hunt monitors. And I’ve been aware of everything that has happened at Black Lives Matter protests and at the Kill the Bill protests too. I remember vividly the shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes and Mark Duggan. And I don’t forget more recent events, like Chris Kaba and Sarah Everard – or history like Cable Street. I know the police are institutionally racist, I know they uphold state power, and right now this state is anti-asylum seeker and anti-refugee.

But, after all, what was real in the world of the Zombie Apocalypse? Eventually, ‘Shirley’ Strachan, lead singer of Skyhooks (and then still in his ‘fairy’ phase) finished warbling about the ‘Lygon Street Limbo’ (“How loooow can you go, go, go?”). By then, the obscene consumption of my recently deceased fellow student had slackened and the undead throng had started to drift away. Meantime, the idea of putting on some cool (i.e. calming) jazz had grown on me. I couldn’t find any Wynton Marsalis in the library’s catalogue (how gross!) but thought that Miles’ Davis ‘Kind of Blue’ might do the trick.

We didn’t wander far. I had decided to go to Union House, the centre of all student social activity on campus. That’s where we’d go to get food (‘The Caff’). That’s where we’d go to see student theatre (‘The Guild Theatre’) or the movies. That’s where all the student clubs had their meetings. It was the hub of student life. Surely, I thought, there would be survivors holed up there who might give me and David a warmer welcome than we could expect back at the Baillieu – a fairly stupid idea, as ideas went. From the Baillieu to the Union was a walk of, maybe, five minutes. I don’t think David knew where I was taking him – but he was content to walk along, holding my hand like a small child. That was okay by me. As long as we were together, the zombies we passed along the way paid me no mind at all. When we got within, say, one hundred metres of Union House, David suddenly became agitated. At first, he just grunted and made indistinct vocalisations. Then, he started twitching once again. He squeezed my hand hard and started bobbing his head up and down in a rhythmic fashion. Finally, he broke free of my grip and broke into a headlong sprint towards the building, roaring as he went. Was this another warning? I trailed along behind him. I could not afford to lose contact with him – he was my passport, my promise of safe conduct, within the kingdom of the zombies. (Did they have a kingdom yet? Or a king?) Near the South exit of Union House was a large eucalypt tree, encircled by a wooden bench seat. Between the seat and the tree trunk could be seen a small knot of zombies, kneeling and attending to something lying on the ground.

Unlike the library, which had just one main entrance, there were just too many entrances to the Union building. It may as well have been open access. It was certainly undefendable. Most of the human remains that were lying about had obviously been there for days. Maybe the building had just been overwhelmed on that first day, in the initial onslaught. But Meryl? She had only just been killed. Where had she been hiding? In one of the activities rooms upstairs? You could hold out there for a while but, well away from the Caff, there’d be no food at all – maybe some water, if you were lucky. Perhaps there were still some survivors clinging on up there. Would I be doing them any favours if I went searching – with my brother in tow? Hmmm. I’d have to think on that one.

The problem was that this remaining creature was, at the time, engaged in hand-to-hand combat with me – and I was rapidly losing the contest. Dead people are so enormously strong, aren’t they? David did not have a clear shot at him because my body was between him and the beast. So, he tried to push me aside to create an opportunity to strike at it. As he pushed me, it lunged forward – and, momentarily, its teeth sank into his left forearm.

David leaves – and comes back Jude came back to try and talk me around – about an hour later. David’s breathing had become extremely laboured. He was still fighting but, but like all the other guys bitten before him, was definitely losing the battle – just as we had all expected. Jude put her hand on my shoulder and said as gently as possible, in the circumstances: “It’s time, Pete. You can do no more. Leave him with us and we’ll attend to him.” Jude was OK, someone my Dad would have called ‘a good sort’ but, despite this, I turned to her and blind fury suddenly welled up in me: “I said he’s not going anywhere! Don’t you understand? My brother is not going to join the zombies outside.” She withdrew her hand slowly and flicked an almost imperceptible glance sideways. I felt my head explode briefly and then everything went black. This, apparently, was ‘Plan B’, the plan to use if I didn’t change my mind about casting David outside of the library and into the hands of the zombies. I awoke with a sickening pain in my head. Jude was beside me once again but I had been trussed up. I was lying on a cold, hard floor and couldn’t move. I looked at her. I’m not sure if she completely felt my hatred for her at what had happened. It’s just that she was the one who was there – she was thus the object of that hatred. She bowed her head and muttered: “It’s done, Pete. David died and we’ve put him outside. You can’t do anything more for him.” Bullshit! David and I were not just brothers. We were identical twins. His joy had always been my joy. His pain had always been my pain. And so it must always be.
