On multiple occasions, I saw some among us being thrown to the floor, really aggressively by police. One of the videos is doing the rounds on Twitter now. But that video doesn’t show how much the police were trying to provoke violence. And unfortunately, this emboldened a small number of far right protestors to come back, dragging out the day for everyone.

‘No!’ answered Frodo, coming back to himself out of darkness, and finding to his surprise that it was not dark, and that out of the window he could see the sunlit garden. ‘Or perhaps, yes. As far as I understand what you have said, I suppose I must keep the Ring and guard it, at least for the present, whatever it may do to me.’

‘Ah,’ said Gandalf, ‘now we come to it. I think Gollum tried to. He set out and came back westward, as far as the Great River. But then he turned aside. He was not daunted by the distance, I am sure. No, something else drew him away. So my friends think, those that hunted him for me.

I turned back to the observation hole. “Don’t make it too long, Mate,” I said to David. The zombies milled about – maybe thirty or so of them. David’s corpse was apparently of no interest to them. He was not fresh meat. He was not a ‘kill’. I’d had some time to observe the zombies. I recognised a few of them from around the campus – just regular guys, nothing special. They did a bit of moaning but never spoke – just like in the movies. But they weren’t stiff-legged and rotting. Well, not yet anyway. Perhaps in another week or so that would come. For the moment, at least, they still moved about fairly nimbly when they wanted to – but, for the most part, they just wandered around with no obvious aim – except, perhaps, waiting for us to emerge. And their eyes, yes, they were very different from living folks’ eyes. Living folks’ eyes constantly scan back and forth to take in as much as they can – I think it’s called a ‘saccade’ (or something similar). Zombies’ eyes don’t. They stare fixedly a lot of the time and only move in jerky- type movements every now and then. I had discussed this also with the medical students. They said this was because ‘the autonomic functions of the brain were down’. They said zombie vision must be relatively poor. Could be – but I didn’t see any of the medical students putting that theory to the test. I stood staring through the observation hole, I guess, for half an hour or more, just watching the zombies, before David gave his first twitch. Eureka! I’d seen that before – with the other guys who’d been bitten. It was only a matter of a few minutes now before David would start to reanimate. I needed to work fast. Nimbly, I climbed the barricade and slid down into the cramped space between barricade and the glass sliding doors. This was a fairly noisy manoeuvre and some of the smaller parts of the barricade clattered to the floor. “Hey, Pete! What the fuck do you think you are doing?” I’d been heard but there was no way I was backing out now.

Therefore, it seems to me, it is difficult to make it stay and come back again, for after the old people have died out, we see the young people speaking it less and less, and worse and worse, and thus it will lessen from time to time

When they caught his words again they found that he had now wandered into strange regions beyond their memory and beyond their waking thought, into limes when the world was wider, and the seas flowed straight to the western Shore; and still on and back Tom went singing out into ancient starlight, when only the Elf-sires were awake. Then suddenly he slopped, and they saw that he nodded as if he was falling asleep. The hobbits sat still before him, enchanted; and it seemed as if, under the spell of his words, the wind had gone, and the clouds had dried up, and the day had been withdrawn, and darkness had come from East and West, and all the sky was filled with the light of white stars.

1And Naomi had a kinsman of her husband's, a mighty man of wealth, of the family of Elimelech; and his name was Boaz. 2And Ruth the Moabitess said unto Naomi, Let me now go to the field, and glean ears of corn after him in whose sight I shall find grace. And she said unto her, Go, my daughter. 3And she went, and came, and gleaned in the field after the reapers: and her hap was to light on a part of the field belonging unto Boaz, who was of the kindred of Elimelech. 4And, behold, Boaz came from Beth-lehem, and said unto the reapers, The LORD be with you. And they answered him, The LORD bless thee. 5Then said Boaz unto his servant that was set over the reapers, Whose damsel is this? 6And the servant that was set over the reapers answered and said, It is the Moabitish damsel that came back with Naomi out of the country of Moab: 7and she said, I pray you, let me glean and gather after the reapers among the sheaves: so she came, and hath continued even from the morning until now, that she tarried a little in the house.

‘ “Good-day to you!” I says, going out to him. “This lane don’t lead anywhere, and wherever you may be going, your quickest way will be back to the road.” I didn’t like the looks of him; and when Grip came out, he took one sniff and let out a yelp as if he had been slung: he put down his tail and bolted off howling. The black fellow sat quite still.

‘Come dear folk!’ she said, taking Frodo by the hand. ‘Laugh and be merry! I am Goldberry, daughter of the River.’ Then lightly she passed them and closing the door she turned her back to it, with her white arms spread out across it. ‘Let us shut out the night!’ she said. ‘For you are still afraid, perhaps, of mist and tree-shadows and deep water, and untame things. Fear nothing! For tonight you are under the roof of Tom Bombadil.’

My perception is that a lot of people think that the union is an outside body who comes in and solves an issue for you. But that’s not the case. We, the workers, the members, are the union, and the role of the union is to empower us to solve our own issues collectively. After all, who has more expertise about our own jobs and working conditions than us? But having a rep is a big part of this, and knowing there is a supportive organization out there to advise and back you up can be very meaningful to first time reps.

This is a charming insight into village life in Cornwall through the remeniscences of those who remember simpler days. 16 people; the oldest born in 1887 and speaking in 1987, think back over their lives to recall water-mills being put out of business by roller-made flour, herding pigs to market in Lostwithiel, and the great blizzard which raged for 3 weeks in 1891, starving the isolated population of Polperro.

Together they carried out Merry, Pippin, and Sam. As Frodo left the barrow for the last time he thought he saw a severed hand wriggling still, like a wounded spider, in a heap of fallen earth. Tom went back in again, and there was a sound of much thumping and stamping. When he came out he was bearing in his arms a great load of treasure: things of gold, silver, copper, and bronze; many beads and chains and jewelled ornaments. He climbed the green barrow and laid them all on top in the sunshine.
