We are a group of people who campaign for the Welsh language and communities in Wales, and recognise that the campaign for Wales' unique language is part of a wider world-wide struggle for minority rights and freedoms. The following international pages provide a forum for international campaigners to share ideas and experiences of their minoritized languages and their struggle for rights. We hope you will draw inspiration from the work of international language campaigns on these pages, and contact us to collaborate or to suggest information. Use your tongue!

CASTLEMAINE GARDENS There was simply no point in remonstrating with David – anymore than there would have been with a pack of hyenas or a pride of lions. David was a killer – that was now part of his nature. (Part of our nature?) However, I needed to get him away from his kill before we arrived at the next scheduled stop. I calculated, correctly, that the crime (if such it be) would be discovered almost as soon as we pulled into the station. The kill (though death had been quick) had been very messy and bloody. It was entirely instinctive and David had given no thought to concealing it. If we’d had the time and equipment, it would have taken hours to clean up and dispose of the remains. We had neither. David continued his feasting as I considered our options. David’s grisly noise did not help. There was really only one option: flee the train at the earliest opportunity and hide in whichever place best presented itself. Castlemaine was the next scheduled stop. It’s a medium-sized own of, maybe, 10,000 people. It was once much bigger – as were many such towns – during the Victorian Goldrush of the 1850’s and 1860’s. But now it relied on agriculture and tourism. I was familiar, in general terms, with its layout as I had visited elderly relatives there several times in my childhood. Where to flee? Where to hide? I guessed I had less than 10 minutes to weigh my options. There were many abandoned mine-shafts but they were way out of town – and very dangerous. Any mines closer to town had been blocked off or filled in decades ago. So, forget that idea. I remembered that, when I was a kid, I’d played in the botanical gardens. For such a modest town, these were fine gardens. When the town had been larger and more prosperous, the wealthy burghers had decided their town needed such a place for genteel recreation. One of those burghers had even named the ornamental lake after his wife, Lake Johanna. It was a largish lake with an island in the middle where ducks and waterfowl made their nests and raised their young. And, moreover, the gardens were within 100m of the train station, on the edge of town. With luck, a lot of luck, we could sprint there before the mess in the baggage car were discovered.

None of you will be surprised that, as an anarchist, I hate this idea just as much as the other one. I am no-one’s subject. Nobody owns me. Whether you call them a king or a duke or a dog’s dinner, naming one person my master, master of all of us, because he came out of the right vagina is pathetic. Monarchy is anti-democracy. Monarchy is anti-equality. Monarchy is anti-freedom.

Creating Software Tools for Cornish with Python In this presentation, I explain my work creating software for Cornish in Python. The Natural Language Processing Toolkit www.nltk.org in Python is used to calculate corpus statistics, and Python programs have been written to do mutation in Cornish, write out Cornish numbers, divide Cornish text into syllables, inflect Cornish verbs and transliterate Kernewek Kemmyn text to the Standard Written Form. The source code of this work is open, and available from my Bitbucket repository (bitbucket.org/davidtreth/taklow- kernewek). Potential future development will be discussed and your ideas invited.

We will also promote innovation, with Cornwall being at the forefront of the developing smart grid agenda and marine and geothermal energy. We set out with great ideas and a passion for the future of our towns but this Plan would not have been possible without their input.

As a matter of fact with Merry’s help he had already chosen and bought a little house at Crickhollow in the country beyond Bucklebury. To all but Sam he pretended he was going to settle down there permanently. The decision to set out eastwards had suggested the idea to him; for Buckland was on the eastern borders of the Shire, and as he had lived there in childhood his going back would at least seem credible.

After I composed myself, I realised that we had the rest of the day to fill in. I’m sure David would happily have gone back to the Hell-hole at Union House – so that he could lounge around with his zombie mates. But I was not going to cross swords again with that bitch-face “Gween” if I could possibly help it. “Hey, Dave! I’ve got a treat for you,” I exclaimed suddenly. “I’m going to take you to the movies.” I gave him no choice and firmly herded him out of Genevieve’s and into the Bug House. I had no idea if he still remembered what a movie was but I didn’t care. David was going to the movies whether he liked it or not. The shabby foyer of the Bug House was relatively untouched. There must have been no-one in it when the Apocalypse passed through. Did it happen at mid-day or thereabouts? No ‘session time’ then, I suppose – not during the week at a small single-screen suburban theatre. (Can you remember what one of those was?) I walked up the narrow staircase to the projection room. Now, you may think I would have no chance of getting the projector operating so that we would view a movie. But that’s where you’d be wrong. Dead wrong. This was in the days before video recorders, well before DVD’s, Blue-Ray and so on. So, schoolteachers needed to know how to operate simple movie projectors to show educational films to their classes. I was no teacher – but my dad was! Dad had done a proper Bell and Howell course and come out with a proper projectionist certificate – very pretty, very impressive. I asked him to bring the school projector home and show me how it worked. He obliged my demands and thus I knew the rudiments of the projectionist’s craft. That said, the projectors (there were 2) that confronted me in the projectionist room of the Carlton Movie House were very different to the one that Dad had brought home from school. A lot bigger. A lot more buttons and levers. I got one of them working in under half an hour (but I think I might have, sort of, broken the other one – sorry, Mr Projectionist).

As a youngster growing up in the clay country I had no idea that the Cornish language even existed. It is only as an adult, as I raise my own children, that a sense of identity has become more important to me and that motivated me to find out whether language classes were available locally. When I asked the question I had no idea how the revival of the language has progressed in the last thirty years and how accessible classes, teachers and literature were. I started studying in 2007 and have taken grades 1, 2 and 3. I am currently studying for grade 4 which involves not only study of the ancient texts, but also requires a demonstration of a knowledge of the history of Cornwall, which I thought I knew pretty well, but I now realise is much more complicated and interesting than I used to think. He described this vision in a series of essays published between 1849 and 1852. Wagner realised these ideas most fully in the first half of the four-opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung).
