The Ordinalia’s unusual name comes from the plural of ‘Ordinal’, a book which contains the equivalent of stage directions for church services.

The Cornish Ordinalia manuscript, which consists of three plays, begins with the Latin note "Here begins the Ordinale of the Origin of the world." An Ordinale was a book of rules and regulations for conducting church services - a bit like stage directions. The first play starts with a speech in Cornish from 'Deus Pater', Latin for God the Father. The Creation of the World (spelled Creacon in the top line) is the only one of the manuscripts to include English stage directions (rather than Latin), perhaps reflecting the fact that it is the most recent document, written in 1611. It starts with a speech from "The Father in Heaven", and the first stage direction notes "The Father must be in a cloud and when he speakes of Heaven let the leaves open." The Life of St Kea was entirely unknown until 20 years ago. Although a large chunk of the play is missing, the surviving script reveals an epic double narrative. The first section tells of the life and miracles of St Kea. The second tells of King Arthur’s struggle with the Romans and his betrayal by Guinevere. The script is written in Cornish but features Latin stage directions (although no stage diagram) and is likely a copy of an earlier script. Image courtesy of the National Library of Wales.

The stage direction on this page, also from the first play, record in Latin that, after Adam's death, his son "Seth puts three pips into Adam's mouth". This is a key part of the 'Legend of the Rood' which runs through the Ordinalia. The tree that grows from the seeds appears in various guises until ultimately the wood is used to make the cross ('rood' in Middle English) on which Christ is crucified. Lucifer, Satan and Beelzebub all make appearances further down the page (left hand side) (f. 8r).

This manuscript caused a huge stir when it was discovered in Wales only 20 years ago, in the papers of an academic after his death. It is a total mystery where it had been for 500 years. Many pages are missing from this manuscript, but this is the first existing page. It starts, in the top left, with the stage direction in Latin, "Keladocus surgit" (St Kea stands up). His speech is in Cornish. The top of the document has been eaten by rodents! Images are courtesy of The National Library of Wales (f. 1r).
