Dozens fell at once – others fled in all directions, trampling on the fallen. The scream of terrified zombies is hard to describe – the sound of thousands of them screaming together is impossible. So, what terrifies a zombie? Well, I can tell you for certain that helicopter gunships do. I couldn’t exactly say how or why these thousands of zombies had been herded back onto the campus where it had all begun – but, now that they were here, it was clear what fate the authorities intended for them. David and I needed to get out and fast. If we were to avoid being strafed by gunfire – or trampled by the panicked undead – I needed a plan. We were hemmed in on all sides. I seized David’s hand even more firmly – he, too, was terrified but seemed to calm a little at my firmer hold. I took him to the base of one of the trees in North Court. We cowered there for precious seconds as the concrete courtyard emptied a little. Time to think. My vision narrowed to a tunnel. I ceased to hear the screams and the gunfire around me. For me, everything went silent. Time slowed to a crawl. My mind had re-directed its entire effort towards solving a single problem: escape. Where to go that might be safe? The only place I could think of was the family crypt in Melbourne General Cemetery, the one where we’d found Paul and Charles. It was ten minutes’ stroll away – in normal circumstances. But, under heavy attack from the air – and with thousands of wailing, murderous zombies between us and that crypt?

We didn’t wander far. I had decided to go to Union House, the centre of all student social activity on campus. That’s where we’d go to get food (‘The Caff’). That’s where we’d go to see student theatre (‘The Guild Theatre’) or the movies. That’s where all the student clubs had their meetings. It was the hub of student life. Surely, I thought, there would be survivors holed up there who might give me and David a warmer welcome than we could expect back at the Baillieu – a fairly stupid idea, as ideas went. From the Baillieu to the Union was a walk of, maybe, five minutes. I don’t think David knew where I was taking him – but he was content to walk along, holding my hand like a small child. That was okay by me. As long as we were together, the zombies we passed along the way paid me no mind at all. When we got within, say, one hundred metres of Union House, David suddenly became agitated. At first, he just grunted and made indistinct vocalisations. Then, he started twitching once again. He squeezed my hand hard and started bobbing his head up and down in a rhythmic fashion. Finally, he broke free of my grip and broke into a headlong sprint towards the building, roaring as he went. Was this another warning? I trailed along behind him. I could not afford to lose contact with him – he was my passport, my promise of safe conduct, within the kingdom of the zombies. (Did they have a kingdom yet? Or a king?) Near the South exit of Union House was a large eucalypt tree, encircled by a wooden bench seat. Between the seat and the tree trunk could be seen a small knot of zombies, kneeling and attending to something lying on the ground.

FLIGHT I was dozing in the infirmary. It was around midnight. Outside, on the parade ground, there was a heck of a commotion going on. The sounds of fist upon face and boot upon other body parts could be clearly heard. There were soldiers screaming and yelling, Aussies and Yanks – name-calling and dire threats. Others vainly trying to contain the brawling. Orders disobeyed. Whistles of MP’s. Soon, the whole camp had turned out onto the parade ground and there were hundreds of troops fighting an extremely vigorous pitched battle. Suddenly, I was wide awake – adrenalin does that. At first, I simply thought: “What is going on?” But then I guessed that the seeds I had planted in the minds of the Doughboys might now be bearing fruit. Seeds of doubt. Seeds of conflict. Young men, decent guys, were both injuring and being injured out there, on the parade ground. Maybe, I wasn’t such a nice person, after all. But, nice person or not, I needed to use the commotion that I had triggered to make my escape. In a panic, I undid the bindings which had been holding me to the bed – actually, I could have done this at any time but had been too ill to even bother trying. I swung my legs off the bed and put my feet on the floor for the first time in some days. I tried to stand. Shit! I was still very weak from the torture and flopped back, breathless, onto the bed. What to do? I couldn’t let this confusion pass without trying to take advantage. This golden opportunity would not come again. From outside, I could hear raised voices, Australian voices, saying things like: “Kill the fuckin’ spy! Get the zombie spy! Kill the little mongrel.” (And so on, like that.)

THE RELIEF OF THE BAILLIEU It was just as Paul had described: a large refrigerated truck, ‘parked’ at a set of traffic lights in Lygon Street, the door of the cab wide open and no driver in sight – and the diesel engine was still idling. (Frugal beasts, those diesel engines.) The vehicle was otherwise untouched – what good was it to zombies? So, David and I approached, and opened the rear doors without difficulty. The driver had obviously only just started his delivery run – the refrigerated compartment was absolutely full of frozen foodstuffs of all kinds. Meat and poultry – frozen and processed. Fruit and vegetables. Pallet loads of it. Literally, tonnes of it. More than enough to feed the fugitives in the Baillieu for weeks. “Hey, Dave! Paul is a complete genius! We could have spent weeks looking for something like this.” David said nothing – not even a grunt came from him. This stuff was now unimportant to him and, I guessed, he wanted to be elsewhere (the basement of Union House) more than ever. “Too bad, Dave,” I said. “I’m not going back there.” (Not unless I absolutely had to.) I was minded to jump into the cab and drive straight to the Baillieu but I had another idea. I would drive it back to the crypt in the cemetery or, at least, as near as I could get this lumbering great vehicle to it. “Jump in, Dave,” I said. “We’re going for a little ride.” David reluctantly complied – he had no other pressing engagements. Of course, you might object that this all sounds highly improbable – and, indeed it was, the finding of the truck, at least. But there was no improbability about my being able to drive that truck. True it is that I did not possess an articulated vehicle licence and had never tried to get one. True also is that, if called upon to drive this vehicle further than the mile or so that I now needed to drive, I would probably have crashed the truck or damaged it irreparably.

So, let's begin by going deep into the ground down the shafta or shaft as English speakers may call it. There's a couple of different places which could serve as the possible root of this word, after the obvious Proto-Indo-European skapos. One might assume that Latin, the source of many words in the Brythonic languages, would have been the source, scapus. It cognates nicely to the Proto-Indo-European but alas did not retain its original meaning. It did, however, give English its word scape. The second possible, and much more likely root, of shafta is from the Proto-Germanic skaftaz. This developed into the Old English sceaft before becoming the Middle and Contemporary English shaft. This was then adopted into Cornish, more or less. But how can we be sure that this is the root, well let's have a look at our Brythonic cousins. In Welsh we have siafft whereas the Breton is barr. The Breton comes from the Proto-Celtic barko meaning spear or shaft, this become bêr (pike/spear) in Welsh and does not appear to exist in contemporary Cornish anymore. Only Cornish and Welsh were thusly exposed to English, so we can say with some certainty that the Germans gave us shafta.
