“‘Spy’? Is there a spy?” I thought. “Who would that be?” It took a minute or two for my woolly-headed self to realize that the only person whose blood they could be baying for was the sower of the seeds of doubt: me! Ingrid and a U.S. Sergeant burst into my room, having vociferously ordered the infirmary guards to stand aside. “Get your goddammed stuff, soldier – and be quick about it,” ordered the Yankee Sergeant. “You’re leaving now – unless you want to be lynched by your fellow countrymen.” (How nice of him to call me ‘soldier’, I thought.) “Move it!” he screamed in my face. I still don’t know his name – but, evidently, he’d been impressed by what I’d had to say at the lecture and believed that ‘his boys’ had been lured to Australia under false pretences. Perhaps Gately and Swooper had spoken to him. In any case, it seemed he considered that my life might be worth saving. I tried to stand once again but my legs buckled underneath me after a few steps. Ingrid, whom I noticed was dishevelled and out of uniform, turned and screamed: “Guard!” One of the three goons, confused and disorientated, came running into the room. Ingrid pointed to me, now lying on the floor. “Pick him up and follow us!” He did. The brutish bastard was surprisingly strong – but, then again, I had lost a lot of weight and condition since arriving at ‘Pucka’. So, I was no great load to carry. Soon, I found myself flung roughly into the back tray of a jeep. It had been parked at the side of the parade ground. “Okay,” I replied. “Let’s suppose there is indeed a leading edge to the infection, carried forward by a small band of fleet-footed and unidirectional zombies. They would be travelling at not less than 20km per day – after making a proper allowance for lost time due to their undertaking only absolutely essential murder and mayhem.” “Agreed. A reasonable estimate,” said Paul. “20 km per day for nine days. So, the fastest group of zombies – and therefore the infection itself – is now nearly two hundred km away from central Melbourne.” “But that means the infection would have reached the three major regional cities in Victoria: Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo,” I observed, stating the obvious. Paul shrugged: “I just hope none of the zombies can drive or fly!” This casual remark – made in jest – made me think of David. You never quite knew what he might be capable of – particularly if he could tap into my mind at will. But there was no time to worry about that possibility now. How many people were within a 200km radius of Melbourne if you included those major regional cities? I didn’t know. I wasn’t up on population statistics at the time. I guessed, maybe, two or three million. And let’s assume that none of the girls (nor gay men?) became zombies, how many potential zombies did that mean? Somewhere between one and one and a half million? Hmm. But, of course, many victims were so badly injured by zombie attack that they simply could not reanimate. Beyond that, perhaps a lot of folk, knowing what was on the way, had fled in front of the leading edge of the epidemic. That would reduce the numbers substantially. Then again, so far as I could see, there had been a total news blackout. So, how would people find out that they needed to flee before it was too late? And, once the numbers of zombies had grown from hundreds to thousands, wouldn’t the leading edge become like an irresistible tidal wave, sweeping all before it? Paul and I calmly debated all of this, debated the end of civilisation as we knew it (or so it seemed) but reached no firm conclusions. The information we had was paltry – we were simply working on guesswork.

The zombies apparently realised that the wall of sound and death had fallen over in front of them – and, as one, they surged forward. The squad commander barked out an order that I couldn’t hear and the entire squad leapt to its collective feet and bolted for the open rear door of the APC. Most managed to enter the vehicle but the door remained stubbornly open during the few seconds that it took for the fastest zombies to run across the narrow width of College Crescent. A few rifle shots rang out but those weapons soon fell silent as well. The squad disappeared under a mass of vengeful zombies. I did not have time to contemplate the grisly fate that befell those brave men. An opportunity had presented itself to me and it needed to be seized without hesitation. I slapped David out of his reverie – he, of course, had no idea as to what had just occurred. He roared his indignation at me but, all the same, followed me out of the room as I screamed: “Come on, Dave! Stay here and we die!” (I didn’t trouble him with the fact that he was already dead.) Soon, we were sprinting past the crowd of zombies that were feasting on the recently deceased soldiers. David’s pace slackened. Evidently, he wanted to join in – even though he had eaten already that day (outside the Rowden White Gallery). I was having none of it – another squad or helicopter gunship would shortly arrive on the scene to find out what had happened. And there would be much unhappiness. The main gates of the cemetery were, fortunately, still open. There were a number of military vehicles parked inside but no-one attending to them. I made a mental note of where I might expect to find an unattended vehicle if one were needed in the near future – but did not linger. My goal remained to get us back to the family crypt where we’d met up with Paul and Charles. It was quiet, weather-proof, probably blast-proof and still stocked (I hoped) with modest supplies of food – enough to last the few days I needed while the immediate hostilities died down.

He welcomed us to his home and showed us generous hospitality for three days. 8His father was sick in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went in to see him and, after prayer, placed his hands on him and healed him. 9When this had happened, the rest of the sick on the island came and were cured. 10They honored us in many ways; and when we were ready to sail, they furnished us with the supplies we needed. Paul’s Arrival at Rome 11After three months we put out to sea in a ship that had wintered in the island—it was an Alexandrian ship with the figurehead of the twin gods Castor and Pollux. 12We put in at Syracuse and stayed there three days. 13From there we set sail and arrived at Rhegium. The next day the south wind came up, and on the following day we reached Puteoli. 14There we found some brothers and sisters who invited us to spend a week with them. And so we came to Rome. 15The brothers and sisters there had heard that we were coming, and they traveled as far as the Forum of Appius and the Three Taverns to meet us. At the sight of these people Paul thanked God and was encouraged. 16When we got to Rome, Paul was allowed to live by himself, with a soldier to guard him. He witnessed to them from morning till evening, explaining about the kingdom of God, and from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets he tried to persuade them about Jesus. 24Some were convinced by what he said, but others would not believe. 25They disagreed among themselves and began to leave after Paul had made this final statement: “The Holy Spirit spoke the truth to your ancestors when he said through Isaiah the prophet: 26“ ‘Go to this people and say, “You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.” 27For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes.
