Nor would I destroy him – or see him destroyed. These were not options. He would stay with me, with us. Jude stood and sighed. She would talk to me again no doubt – within an hour or two – before Dave actually died. In the meantime, she left me to sit beside my dying brother. At least he was now unconscious, no longer suffering. Beads of sweat still clung to his forehead. He was pale, feverish, unmoving – except for the shallow rise and fall of his chest. When his breathing ceased altogether, I knew what would happen – and happen very quickly. I’d seen it happen a dozen or more times in the last week – to other guys. Always the guys, never the girls. Not so far, anyway.

Nine days?” This sounded like one of those questions from Monty Python’s Flying Circus: “If you tie a coconut shell to its leg, how far can an African swallow fly in ...?” “Zombies can walk as fast as living people but the ones I’ve seen tend not to travel in straight lines. They just mill about in much the same place.” “Let’s think about that,” said Paul, warming to the conundrum. “You wouldn’t see the ones who had cleared off, would you? As we sheltered in the dubious protection of the Baillieu Library, we accessed a fairly beaten-up black and white TV that we found in the Head Librarian’s office. (Obviously, the library’s budget didn’t yet run to purchasing one of those expensive, new-fangled colour TV’s.) When we first tuned in, nothing of note. Everything was normal as far as the TV broadcasters were concerned – all the usual programmes: cooking, old movies, chat shows, cartoons – completely uninterrupted. There was no newsflash until over an hour after the creatures had burst in upon us in the French lecture. Then the first newsflash: sketchy and delivered in a jocular fashion by a disbelieving newsreader who concluded: “...Hey! Is this April Fools’ or what?!”

THE MISSING BIT OF THE STORY I don’t know what happened next. I wasn’t there and never heard. At the relevant time, I was drifting in and out of consciousness in the infirmary – still feeling like shit whenever I awoke properly. (In more recent times, doctors have told me that they are amazed that I survived at all. As well as my lungs being badly scarred, there was evidence of bleeding in the brain, revealed by an MRI years later. The doctor who did the scan told me that I looked like a boxer who’d had too many fights. But, surely, he must have exaggerated – after all, I ended up pursuing a reasonably successful career (though, I confess, I often feel a bit vague these days.) In any case, over the years, I have ‘filled in’ the missing bit of the story – in my own mind, at least. This probably bears no relationship to what actually happened but I’ll share this version of the missing piece with you. This was a favourite watering-hole for Australian troops returning to Puckapunyal from the zombie ‘battle’ front. The overseas troops who were still on the base – and who had not yet been deployed to the battle front – also favoured the Prince of Wales. How shall I describe the Public Bar of the Prince of Wales, circa 1970? Ever been to a country pub that has not been renovated since around that time? If so, you’ve seen the Public Bar of the Prince of Wales: definitely no soft surfaces, a worn and cracked linoleum floor (for easy cleaning) and a number of ‘tall’ wooden tables around which knots of drinkers gathered and upon which they rested their glasses.

I will show you the one who will be the bride and wife of the Lamb.” 10 Then with the help of the Spirit, he took me to the top of a very high mountain. There he showed me the holy city of Jerusalem coming down from God in heaven. 11The glory of God made the city bright. It was dazzling and crystal clear like a precious jasper stone. 12 The city had a high and thick wall with twelve gates, and each one of them was guarded by an angel. On each of the gates was written the name of one of the twelve tribes of Israel. 13Three of these gates were on the east, three were on the north, three more were on the south, and the other three were on the west. 14The city was built on twelve foundation stones. On each of the stones was written the name of one of the Lamb's twelve apostles. 15 The angel who spoke to me had a gold measuring stick to measure the city and its gates and its walls. 16The city was shaped like a cube, because it was just as high as it was wide. When the angel measured the city, it was about 2,400 kilometers high and 2,400 kilometers wide. 17Then the angel measured the wall, and by our measurements it was about 60 meters high. 18 The wall was built of jasper, and the city was made of pure gold, clear as crystal. 19Each of the twelve foundations was a precious stone. The first was jasper, the second was sapphire, the third was agate, the fourth was emerald, 20the fifth was onyx, the sixth was carnelian, the seventh was chrysolite, the eighth was beryl, the ninth was topaz, the tenth was chrysoprase, the eleventh was jacinth, and the twelfth was amethyst. 21Each of the twelve gates was a solid pearl. The streets of the city were made of pure gold, clear as crystal. 22I did not see a temple there. The Lord God All-Powerful and the Lamb were its temple. 23 And the city did not need the sun or the moon. The glory of God was shining on it, and the Lamb was its light. 24 Nations will walk by the light of that city, and kings will bring their riches there. 25 Its gates are always open during the day, and night never comes. 26The glorious treasures of nations will be brought into the city. 27 But nothing unworthy will be allowed to enter. With these signs he had deluded those who had received the mark of the beast and worshiped its image. The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulfur. 21The rest were killed with the sword coming out of the mouth of the rider on the horse, and all the birds gorged themselves on their flesh.

The Corporal was, of course, correct on both counts – neither Ingrid nor the U.S. Sergeant, both theoretically superior in rank, had any authority to order him about. Stalemate. I could see the Sergeant was going to move – even more – into bullying mode. I judged that it wouldn’t work on the Corporal – who obviously knew very well what was the proper chain of command. So, it was time for me to stand up and be counted. I crawled from the back of the first jeep and stood uncertainly beside it. I called out weakly to the guards: “Gentlemen, I’m the reason these officers are here. I’m the one who has caused the rioting over on the parade ground ...” I paused, giddy from standing, before completing my thought. “ ... If you don’t let these guys lock me up for my own protection, you’re going to have a lynching on your hands. I suspect the Camp Commandant will not be well pleased when he has to explain to his superiors why my body is swinging from the flagpole in the morning – when you could have saved him the trouble simply by obeying the orders of the officers now standing in front of you. So, what do you think?” Both the Sergeant and Ingrid turned, as one, and gaped at me in amazement. (Why hadn’t they thought of that?) The guards knew who I was and why I was being held in the camp – it seemed everyone did. The Corporal looked at the Sergeant. “You wanna lock this guy up? Why didn’t you say so in the first place? That’s easy – no orders required.” And, with that, I joined the Sergeant and Ingrid, the guards stood aside and we entered the building without further ado. Then the Sergeant briefly turned back and spoke to the now-confused driver of the second jeep – who was apparently in on the overall plan and had been listening to everything that had just been said: “You’re dismissed, soldier. I will see you later.” The driver of the second jeep, briefly, looked puzzled.

Jesus Heals Two Men with Demons (Mk 5.1–20; Lk 8.26–39) 28When Jesus came to the territory of Gadara on the other side of the lake, he was met by two men who came out of the burial caves there. These men had demons in them and were so fierce that no one dared travel on that road. 29At once they screamed, “What do you want with us, you Son of God? Have you come to punish us before the right time?” 30Not far away there was a large herd of pigs feeding. 31So the demons begged Jesus, “If you are going to drive us out, send us into that herd of pigs.” 32“Go,” Jesus told them; so they left and went off into the pigs. The whole herd rushed down the side of the cliff into the lake and was drowned. 33The men who had been taking care of the pigs ran away and went into the town, where they told the whole story and what had happened to the men with the demons. 34So everyone from the town went out to meet Jesus; and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their territory.
