Mount's Bay waves call me. Daily without fail. To dive and swim in crystal waters. But when sewage pipes add. Their unwelcome surprise. Is it right we all cry "cheers". And share a mouthful. Of this salt water shit!

When their breakfast was over, and their packs all trussed up again, it was after ten o’clock, and the day was beginning to turn fine and hot. They went down the slope, and across the stream where it dived under the road, and up the next slope, and up and down another shoulder of the hills; and by that time their cloaks, blankets, water, food, and other gear already seemed a heavy burden.

She passed a tablet through the peephole and I took it with some water. It was no mere Aspro – it was something morphine-based and sent me into la-la land for some hours. (I recall dreaming that I was at some dark, smoke-filled dive listening to Muddy Waters strutting his stuff – obviously one of the more pleasant experiences of the day. That music from the Common Room had infiltrated my unconscious mind. This helped further to blot out the pain.) As the opiate started to wear off, and the pain returned, it occurred to me that Ingrid need not have given me such powerful pain relief – or, indeed, any at all. Maybe there was some remorse for the evil which she had actively participated in – and which had caused me the pain in the first place. Or, maybe, there was another motive. I would wait and see. If it were remorse, that was something I could work with. o0o Next day, Ingrid came with the goons and gave orders to have me bound hand and foot and taken to an interview room. David remained in the cell, groaning and moaning. Ingrid and I sat either side of a small wooden table in the airless room. She ordered the guards to wait outside. They did so with neither hesitation nor question. Her outward manner had softened a little but I could not trust her, of course. She had willingly participated in systematic torture only the day before. She had sat calmly and taken notes while I suffered. “What’s on your mind, doctor?” I asked. “We can talk freely here. The Captain is temporarily off the base and there is no recording equipment in this room. We are not being observed.” I shrugged. Where was this going? She continued: “Those things that you said in the lecture theatre the other day, are they true? I need to know this. Are they really slaughtering kids who might recover?” Still bound hand and foot, I leaned forward, looked her in the eye and said with as much conviction as I could muster:

‘Long after, but still very long ago, there lived by the banks of the Great River on the edge of Wilderland a clever-handed and quiet-footed little people. I guess they were of hobbit-kind; akin to the fathers of the fathers of the Stoors, for they loved the River, and often swam in it, or made little boats of reeds. There was among them a family of high repute, for it was large and wealthier than most, and it was ruled by a grandmother of the folk, stern and wise in old lore, such as they had. The most inquisitive and curious-minded of that family was called Sméagol. He was interested in roots and beginnings; he dived into deep pools; he burrowed under trees and growing plants; he tunnelled into green mounds; and he ceased to look up at the hill-tops, or the leaves on trees, or the flowers opening in the air: his head and his eyes were downward.

Genevieve’s was an institution then: a typical student dive with chromium and Laminex tables, cheerful staff and a menu with a whole bunch of fairly tasty but unhealthy food. It was the place to go whether you were going to the movies next door or simply skipping classes. Kids in the U.S. might reasonably have mistaken it for a diner or a 1950’s drugstore – but it wasn’t actually either. It was just “Genevieve’s”. As I entered, I noted that Genevieve’s was deserted but there were the usual signs that the Zombie Apocalypse had called by. Upturned tables, shattered crockery and coagulated blood on the floor – but no actual corpses. That was a pleasant change. The lights were still on and, as it turned out, the fridges were still operating. The sight that this particular starving man beheld upon opening the main fridge door was blissful. It was fully stocked with all the treats that Genevieve’s customarily served to its youthful crowd. “Pancakes and ice-cream it is!” I said. I heated a skillet on the stove and made a bowl of pancake mix. A bit of oil in the pan, a minute or two on medium flame, flip each pancake near the end and voila! Pancakes. Load the resulting ‘stack’ with maple syrup and several scoops of ice-cream and you have a starving man’s salvation. I offered some to David – seated at a nearby table – but he seemed repelled at the very idea of eating living folks’ food. So, I ate it all myself while he watched me with his dead eyes. I shouldn’t have eaten so much food nor food so rich in sugar because, truth be told, I really had been starving, clinically so. I hadn’t eaten a solid meal since the initial onslaught – just a few packs of snack-food from the vending machines in the library. So, yes, I threw up – you don’t need the details but I imagined David was thinking “I told you so!”
