I enrolled in Cornish classes shortly after we retired to Cornwall in 2013 and, over several years, passed the four grades of the official examinations, all with Distinction. I then went on to teach the language at the Heamoor Class. In 2022 I was honoured to be made a ‘language bard’ of the Cornish Gorsedh. This is the organisation that fosters all things Cornish and the Celtic connection. The photo shows me being inducted by the Grand Bard, Pol Hodge. This is the occasion when your bardic name is announced publicly. Mine is Tas Lowen, meaning ‘Contented Father’. I chose that name to reflect what is one of the greatest blessings I enjoy: three wonderful, wise and caring children, who are a huge support and comfort to me and my wife in our old age. This is the recently updated (2010) publication based on Ray Edwards' extremely popular reference work, first published in 1995. A comprehensive list of Cornish verbs; over 1400 in this edition compared to over 1100 in the original. Over 280 of the verbs are displayed in full conjugation of all tenses, which is slightly more than the original, and this edition includes a guide to the mutations of each displayed verb. The new A5 format takes up less space in a bag than the orginal in A4, while still providing more essential information for the more advanced learner. A 'must-have' for anyone learning Cornish at Kesva 3rd-grade or beyond and a hugely valuable addition to any Cornish-speaker's bookshelf.

A few of the 4th grade students have been trying out their translation skills with some of their favourite literature. This is a piece translated from 'Betjeman Country' by one of them. It shows nicely the process of getting English to make sense in Cornish. The fist part is the poem as Betjeman wrote it, the second part is the poem 'adjusted ' slightly so that the result makes sense in Cornish, the third is the poem in Cornish.

As a youngster growing up in the clay country I had no idea that the Cornish language even existed. It is only as an adult, as I raise my own children, that a sense of identity has become more important to me and that motivated me to find out whether language classes were available locally. When I asked the question I had no idea how the revival of the language has progressed in the last thirty years and how accessible classes, teachers and literature were. I started studying in 2007 and have taken grades 1, 2 and 3. I am currently studying for grade 4 which involves not only study of the ancient texts, but also requires a demonstration of a knowledge of the history of Cornwall, which I thought I knew pretty well, but I now realise is much more complicated and interesting than I used to think. Plutonium is a radioactive chemical element with the symbol Pu and atomic number 94. It is an actinide metal of silvery-gray appearance that tarnishes when exposed to air, and forms a dull coating when oxidized. The element normally exhibits six allotropes and four oxidation states. It reacts with carbon, halogens, nitrogen, silicon, and hydrogen. When exposed to moist air, it forms oxides and hydrides that can expand the sample up to 70% in volume, which in turn flake off as a powder that is pyrophoric. It is radioactive and can accumulate in bones, which makes the handling of plutonium dangerous. Plutonium was first synthetically produced and isolated in late 1940 and early 1941, by a deuteron bombardment of uranium-238 in the 1.5-metre (60 in) cyclotron at the University of California, Berkeley. First, neptunium-238 (half-life 2.1 days) was synthesized, which subsequently beta-decayed to form the new element with atomic number 94 and atomic weight 238 (half-life 88 years). Since uranium had been named after the planet Uranus and neptunium after the planet Neptune, element 94 was named after Pluto, which at the time was considered to be a planet as well. Wartime secrecy prevented the University of California team from publishing its discovery until 1948. Plutonium is the element with the highest atomic number to occur in nature. Trace quantities arise in natural uranium-238 deposits when uranium-238 captures neutrons emitted by decay of other uranium-238 atoms. Both plutonium-239 and plutonium-241 are fissile, meaning that they can sustain a nuclear chain reaction, leading to applications in nuclear weapons and nuclear reactors. Plutonium-240 exhibits a high rate of spontaneous fission, raising the neutron flux of any sample containing it. The presence of plutonium-240 limits a plutonium sample's usability for weapons or its quality as reactor fuel, and the percentage of plutonium-240 determines its grade (weapons-grade, fuel-grade, or reactor-grade). Plutonium-238 has a half-life of 87.7 years and emits alpha particles. It is a heat source in radioisotope thermoelectric generators, which are used to power some spacecraft. Plutonium isotopes are expensive and inconvenient to separate, so particular isotopes are usually manufactured in specialized reactors.
