After I composed myself, I realised that we had the rest of the day to fill in. I’m sure David would happily have gone back to the Hell-hole at Union House – so that he could lounge around with his zombie mates. But I was not going to cross swords again with that bitch-face “Gween” if I could possibly help it. “Hey, Dave! I’ve got a treat for you,” I exclaimed suddenly. “I’m going to take you to the movies.” I gave him no choice and firmly herded him out of Genevieve’s and into the Bug House. I had no idea if he still remembered what a movie was but I didn’t care. David was going to the movies whether he liked it or not. The shabby foyer of the Bug House was relatively untouched. There must have been no-one in it when the Apocalypse passed through. Did it happen at mid-day or thereabouts? No ‘session time’ then, I suppose – not during the week at a small single-screen suburban theatre. (Can you remember what one of those was?) I walked up the narrow staircase to the projection room. Now, you may think I would have no chance of getting the projector operating so that we would view a movie. But that’s where you’d be wrong. Dead wrong. This was in the days before video recorders, well before DVD’s, Blue-Ray and so on. So, schoolteachers needed to know how to operate simple movie projectors to show educational films to their classes. I was no teacher – but my dad was! Dad had done a proper Bell and Howell course and come out with a proper projectionist certificate – very pretty, very impressive. I asked him to bring the school projector home and show me how it worked. He obliged my demands and thus I knew the rudiments of the projectionist’s craft. That said, the projectors (there were 2) that confronted me in the projectionist room of the Carlton Movie House were very different to the one that Dad had brought home from school. A lot bigger. A lot more buttons and levers. I got one of them working in under half an hour (but I think I might have, sort of, broken the other one – sorry, Mr Projectionist).

Luke 8 The Parable of the Sower 1After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, 2and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out; 3Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod’s household; Susanna; and many others. Having attended to our ablutions, I felt the need to rest again and to block out the intermittent roar of the ongoing slaughter outside. I was just too stuffed from what had been happening over the last week and more – and, anyway, we had nowhere else to go just at the minute. More than that, if I were to continue on, I couldn’t afford to think about the horror of recent and ongoing events – it was simply too overwhelming and sleep was the place to retreat from all that. David lapsed into a torpor with which I was now becoming familiar. Was it sleep? Was it another form of death? I awoke again in the afternoon, I think. The shooting was now very sporadic and the cries of the zombies were no longer audible. Still, we’d need to be here for at least a few days before it was safe to venture out – or so I guessed – and I would need to keep myself occupied. What to do next? Then I hit upon it: there was a pack of playing cards that Charles and Paul had left behind in their rush to exit. Today, I would try to teach David how to play poker. It was a game he’d once been good at – and had enjoyed. So, why not? Why not indeed? But first, I would catch up on world events. Yes, miraculously, I had managed to hold onto the transistor radio whilst effecting our escape from the battle. True, it was now a little battered – and smelled a lot of gasoline soot – but it still worked. (I hoped that the batteries had been relatively new because I had no replacements at hand.) “This is the BBC World Service,” the announcer intoned. (I was warming to that voice.) News that I wasn’t interested in came first but the ‘Battle of Melbourne Port” was the third item of the broadcast. The item confirmed a couple of things. The first was that the herding of the zombies into the uni campus – and their subsequent destruction there – had been entirely planned and was claimed to have been largely successful in its aim. (There was no mention of the soldiers who had been taken by the zombies during the battle.)

But what? David and I did not have to wait long to get an answer to that question. Soon, helicopters hovered overhead – unseen but definitely heard. Spotlights shone blindingly from the aircraft and played upon the throng – and then the shooting started. These, it seemed, were no ordinary helicopters. They were spitting fire from both sides and beams of tracer bullets rent the black sky, raining down on the zombies below. Dozens fell at once – others fled in all directions, trampling on the fallen. The scream of terrified zombies is hard to describe – the sound of thousands of them screaming together is impossible. So, what terrifies a zombie? Well, I can tell you for certain that helicopter gunships do. I couldn’t exactly say how or why these thousands of zombies had been herded back onto the campus where it had all begun – but, now that they were here, it was clear what fate the authorities intended for them. David and I needed to get out and fast. If we were to avoid being strafed by gunfire – or trampled by the panicked undead – I needed a plan. We were hemmed in on all sides. I seized David’s hand even more firmly – he, too, was terrified but seemed to calm a little at my firmer hold. I took him to the base of one of the trees in North Court. We cowered there for precious seconds as the concrete courtyard emptied a little. Time to think. My vision narrowed to a tunnel. I ceased to hear the screams and the gunfire around me. For me, everything went silent. Time slowed to a crawl. My mind had re-directed its entire effort towards solving a single problem: escape. Where to go that might be safe? The only place I could think of was the family crypt in Melbourne General Cemetery, the one where we’d found Paul and Charles. It was ten minutes’ stroll away – in normal circumstances. But, under heavy attack from the air – and with thousands of wailing, murderous zombies between us and that crypt?

Though we could not yet see it, I guessed that a heavy machine gun had been placed opposite the exit and it was systematically mowing down the beasts who were trying to escape that way. Abruptly, the helicopter gunships departed – for no reason that was readily discernible. “That can’t be good,” I thought. “Why would these most potent weapons suddenly leave the field of battle with the job not yet done?”(Vercingetorix’ mistake?) The chatter of other machine guns started up, further away, on both sides of the campus – and, faintly, others more distant than that. I guessed that all exits from the campus had now been blocked. Somehow, the zombies had been herded here (how?) and, now that the acres that comprised the main campus of Melbourne University were full to bursting point with tens of thousands of them, the trap had been snapped shut. There was no escaping and they were being wiped out from the air and from the ground. “That’s one way of clearing a route from the port,” I thought. I supposed that’s what they were doing – but who could know for sure? The zombies who had pressed forward to the exit – and had not yet been cut down in the hail of bullets – started to retreat, back in the direction of the cricket oval. This made for an even greater crush of panicky bodies. Then came a growing rumble from the air. None of the zombies paid it any heed – but I recognised what it was. Little wonder that the helicopter gunships had moved away. They were making way for a far more potent weapon in the form of an approaching jet plane. Not good news. For a moment, I naively thought it might have been a passenger service but, of course, it was not. The sound of the jet engine was quite different. Though I could not see it, the rate at which the rumble was growing suggested the plane was flying fast and low. Time for ‘Plan B’. I tugged on David’s hand and roughly pulled him sideways – out of the main flow of the throng and towards the rounded tower of St. Hilda’s college. Within a few short seconds, there was a blinding flash and a deafening ‘foomph!’
