So, there I sat in the Rowden White, calmly observing events I never thought possible. I went into the listening room. Sure enough, there were several joints lying on the floor where their owners had left them as they had fled on Day One of the plague. The temptation to light up was overwhelming. You can understand that I felt the need for a bit of relaxation and cheering up. But I didn’t light up. Two reasons: I needed to keep my wits about me – and I couldn’t find any matches. Bugger! “Oh well, at least I can play some music while I’m waiting,” I said to no-one. The library’s collection of vinyl was quite extensive – ‘your taxes at work’, folks. After a time considering my options, I rejected the obvious cheer-up choice of Monty Python’s record of “And Now for Something Completely Different’ and went with the then-new “Living in the Seventies” by Skyhooks. I figured out how to pipe the music through the public address system of the Gallery and turned it up loud, very loud. I observed only the briefest of pauses among those still boisterously feasting outside the gallery door. “Perhaps they prefer jazz,” I said to myself. “I’ll put on Wynton Marsalis next.” Yes, the whole scene had an air of unreality about it. But, after all, what was real in the world of the Zombie Apocalypse? Eventually, ‘Shirley’ Strachan, lead singer of Skyhooks (and then still in his ‘fairy’ phase) finished warbling about the ‘Lygon Street Limbo’ (“How loooow can you go, go, go?”). By then, the obscene consumption of my recently deceased fellow student had slackened and the undead throng had started to drift away. Meantime, the idea of putting on some cool (i.e. calming) jazz had grown on me. I couldn’t find any Wynton Marsalis in the library’s catalogue (how gross!) but thought that Miles’ Davis ‘Kind of Blue’ might do the trick.

David didn’t seem to want to leave the comfort and fun of the truck cabin. He was enjoying the ride and his elevated position above the hoi-poloi – or so it seemed to me. So, I dragged him out. He came back with me to the crypt – but only with considerable bad grace. (Lots of huffing and groaning.) I met Paul outside the crypt. “We’ve got the truck. It’s bursting with food- enough to feed a small army. It’s parked outside the front entrance. You and Charles must come with us. You’ll be much safer with the others at the Baillieu, now that they will have food.” Paul turned it over in his mind. There was a problem. “How will I sell it to Charles? He thinks the zombies are roundhead soldiers from the mid-17th century. He doesn’t understand the danger we are in by staying here – more or less alone and isolated.” “Leave it to me, my Friend.” I ran into the crypt, ahead of David and Paul, exclaiming breathlessly: “Your Royal Majesty, I have just received word from Henrietta-Maria (i.e. Jude). The cavalier troops have regrouped not far from here. She begs that you join them and take command.” A king should sit at the head of his army, shouldn’t he? “Oh, goody. We do love that girl!” came Charles’ joyous response. No more problem – it was Paul’s turn to admire my own wit and guile. Quickly Paul and Charles gathered their essential belongings and, with only minimal resistance from the zombies who had gathered about in apparent curiosity, we succeeded in getting back to the truck and piling into its cab. (Speed was the key to our safe passage.) “And now, to the Baillieu!” I shouted.

Just down the road, the University Café (not as popular as Tamani’s) was in better shape and so I cheerfully got into their cupboards and fridge to stock up on essential items. I took mainly stuff that was in tins and cans so that it would last. They had a stock of tinned hams and plum puddings, apparently left over from Christmas. Fine by me – so I took as many as I could carry in the back- pack I retrieved along the way. (Don’t ask me who was wearing it at the time – they weren’t going to need it again, I promise you.) I tried to encourage David to share the load with me – I even found another back-pack for him. But he was having none of it. Apparently, zombies don’t do the beast-of-burden thing. (A fact well worth remembering, I’m sure.) In any event, David was getting twitchy again. At first, I thought it must have been hunger (oh no!) but he was just bored. I offered him an apple that I had just swiped from the University Café. He snatched at it and threw it away in disgust. (What had I been thinking? Fruit? For a zombie?) So, I selected another from a nearby basket and bit into it. It wasn’t that fresh – it had been sitting around for over a week – but it was okay (and, unlike the pancakes, it didn’t make me throw up.) How to avoid going back to Union House – that was the pressing problem. Where would any self-respecting zombie prefer to go – other than a charnel house full of zombies (and one psychopathic cat)? Then it struck me: “Hey, Dave! Wanna go to the cemetery? You know, the big one that’s just near here?” He stopped twitching. That was a good sign. But did he know what I was talking about? Possibly, he did. Zombie intelligence is not an easy thing to understand – and, in David’s case, it was complicated by the fact (as I knew) that he could tap into my own mind to boost whatever wit he had been left with following his death. I was like a poorly connected hard-drive, I suppose (though hard-drives, external or otherwise, were unheard of at that time).

Paul’s Longing to Visit Rome 8First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being reported all over the world. 9God, whom I serve in my spirit in preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness how constantly I remember you 10in my prayers at all times; and I pray that now at last by God’s will the way may be opened for me to come to you. 11I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong— 12that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith. 13I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that I planned many times to come to you (but have been prevented from doing so until now) in order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles. 14I am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish. 15That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are in Rome. 16For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. 17For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.” God’s Wrath Against Sinful Humanity 18The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. 21For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles. 24Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen. 26Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error. 28Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. 29They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. 32Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

“You haven’t been reading the papers, my friend,” I replied. Our own troops had not long returned from the war and been demobbed. The morale of those remaining had been destroyed, firstly by what had happened to them (and what they had witnessed) in that war and, secondly, by the reception they had received upon their return home. To our great shame, our soldiers were reviled in the street and ignored by those in the government which had sent them (often as 19 year-old conscripts whose ‘number’ had come up in a public ballot.) Many were even spat upon when they returned. They had not asked to go to that war and, in most cases, had only served their country in the way that their revered fathers and grandfathers had done before them. The injustice that they suffered would not be addressed until many years later – and, even then, inadequately and too late for the many who had died (often by their own hand) in the meantime. Of importance to the zombie apocalypse that was now occurring, the Australian Army was, just then, not in prime shape to meet the challenge that unexpectedly confronted the nation. But, as it turned out, they were not so far away even then. After a time, Paul and I realised we could do no more than speculate as to what may have been happening outside Melbourne. So, the conversation turned to more immediate matters. “The folks back at the Baillieu are starving, you know,” I said. “Really starving. They’ve had nothing substantial to eat since this all began – just a few snacks from the vending machines.” “And they are not likely to get re-supplied any time soon, I’d guess,” said Paul. “But why are you concerned? They kicked you out, didn’t they?” “David and I were a package deal: kick him out and you kick me out,” I said. “And they had to kick him out, didn’t they? I hold no grudges. But God’s word is not chained. 10Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. 11Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with him, we will also live with him; 12if we endure, we will also reign with him. If we disown him, he will also disown us; 13if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself. Dealing With False Teachers 14Keep reminding God’s people of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen. 15Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. 16Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly. 17Their teaching will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, 18who have departed from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already taken place, and they destroy the faith of some. 19Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.” 20In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for special purposes and some for common use. 21Those who cleanse themselves from the latter will be instruments for special purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work. 22Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 23Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. 24And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. 25Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, 26and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.
