A few years ago, I hear a story from a friend's mum about a local cattle charmer in the Liskeard area. Her name was Mrs Harris and, according to the story, she was the mother of a local tyre salesman in the town (there's a clue in the name). In the story, the farmer would phone Mrs Harris and she would heal the cows just by knowing in which field there were. This is one of my favourite stories and I love the idea of learning cattle charming - but I haven't found a course yet... Anyway, below is a poem I wrote celebrating Mrs Harris and the magic of cattle charming - be it true or false, it's still a lovely story.

Neptunium is a chemical element with the symbol Np and atomic number 93. A radioactive actinide metal, neptunium is the first transuranic element. Its position in the periodic table just after uranium, named after the planet Uranus, led to it being named after Neptune, the next planet beyond Uranus. A neptunium atom has 93 protons and 93 electrons, of which seven are valence electrons. Neptunium metal is silvery and tarnishes when exposed to air. The element occurs in three allotropic forms and it normally exhibits five oxidation states, ranging from +3 to +7. It is radioactive, poisonous, pyrophoric, and capable of accumulating in bones, which makes the handling of neptunium dangerous. Although many false claims of its discovery were made over the years, the element was first synthesized by Edwin McMillan and Philip H. Abelson at the Berkeley Radiation Laboratory in 1940.[4] Since then, most neptunium has been and still is produced by neutron irradiation of uranium in nuclear reactors. The vast majority is generated as a by-product in conventional nuclear power reactors. While neptunium itself has no commercial uses at present, it is used as a precursor for the formation of plutonium-238, and in radioisotope thermal generators to provide electricity for spacecraft. Neptunium has also been used in detectors of high-energy neutrons.

SPENDING TIME IN THE FAMILY CRYPT. I slept for a time out of sheer exhaustion – both mental and physical. Once the adrenalin stopped flowing, I was out cold. When I awoke, it was daylight. I could still hear the occasional report of guns – light and heavy – coming from outside. I even fancied that I heard a few tank rounds being loosed off and singing as they flew through the air. There was still audible screaming and roaring. The zombies had not yet been completely subdued but, surely, the military operation was now merely mopping up those who had survived the overwhelming force used by the military on the previous night. I didn’t need to use my imagination to visualise what pitiless slaughter was still happening beyond the closed steel door of the crypt. But, for the moment, we were spared from participating in it – either as victims or as perpetrators. (“Either as victims or as perpetrators”. What a choice. David and I, together, stood in a unique position.) For the sake of my ongoing sanity, I decided to block those events out – anything, in fact – even trivial, unimportant things. I had a lot of time to observe the inside of the family crypt in which David and I now sheltered. So, let me share my observations with you. The owners of the facility were plainly of Italian descent. Even if one could not have read the names which appeared on the plaques attached to the various niches, you just knew this was so, at first sight. The interior was festooned with statues of Jesus, Joseph and the Blessed Virgin Mary (including the one that Paul had used to dispatch the zombie that attacked Charles). The walls bore frescoes of biblical scenes which seemed to draw heavily on the images of the Sistine Chapel – and there were holy pictures and rosary beads placed, seemingly at random, all about the place. But my favourite artefact was a plastic model of a giant, but still avuncular, Pope John XXIII standing in the entrance of St. Peter’s Basilica. Why was this my favourite? Because, if you squeezed the plastic hand that was bestowing the papal blessing, a little light lit up in the cupola of the basilica!

And every morning, when the day broke, I went boldly into the chamber, and spoke courageously to him, calling him by name in a hearty tone, and inquiring how he has passed the night. A DAY AT THE CARLTON BUGHOUSE Morning couldn’t come quick enough. “Come on, Dave, I’m hungry,” I said. “I need to find some food fit for living folk.” Dave seemed content to remain where he was. Apparently, he was not hungry. I wondered idly how often a major predator needed a feed. Once a week? Wasn’t that how often lions needed to kill? But lions aren’t dead. “How often,” I asked myself, “would a lion need to eat if it were dead?” With that, I started to wonder about the declining nature of my current thought processes. I needed to eat and eat now. So, I kicked David and he growled at me. (The ever-present cat chimed in with a supportive hiss.) I seized David’s hand and hauled him to his feet. He emitted an unhappy rumble but seemed willing enough to come with me. We emerged from Union House into the morning daylight. Didn’t I read somewhere that zombies were supposed to be unable to come out in the daylight? Well, that’s not true. There were numerous zombies milling about in the Eastern quadrangle (whose official name I forget) – in broad daylight just as there had been since the initial onslaught. Zombies are fine with daylight – but do they get a decent tan? As we walked through the quadrangle, David’s hand still somewhat unwillingly in mine, I cast my eye about the scattered corpses. Nothing fresh here. I guessed they all dated from Day One. Why did some victims reanimate – like David – and others not?

“Very well, Captain,” I said. “You’re in charge. I don’t want to have a ten- thousand volt cattle-prod rammed up my arse again. That was absolutely excruciating!” (This, of course, was another lie. No-one had used a cattle-prod on me yet – but the Captain did not know this.) There were three cattle-prods leaning carelessly against the wall on the side of the stage. I pointed to them and fell silent. However, the discontent among the members of the audience was palpable – and audible. The Captain was not so stupid as to ignore the fact that he was rapidly losing the troops’ attention and, along with that, his own credibility. He flashed that creepy smile again. (Yuck!) “Now, now, Mr Zombie’s brother,” said the Captain. (He’d forgotten my name – it was of no importance to him.) “There’s no question of using the cattle- prods on you. You know that, don’t you? Those are just in case your brother gets out of hand.” “Let him speak!” shouted one of the bolder GI’s at the back of the hall. “We want to know what he has to say.” (And thus I had him!) The Captain’s deep sigh was not heard above the general hubbub that had now broken out. “Very well”, he shouted above the din. “I will allow him to take your questions but do remember he is not on our side. He was caught protecting a zombie.” “Caught protecting my only brother!” I corrected, now gaining in confidence. A young GI stepped forward to the microphone, introduced himself (“Private First class Brendan Swooper from Idaho”) and asked: “How come you’re not a zombie yourself when your twin brother is?” The answer to this was obvious to me (I’d not been bitten and David had) but that answer would have been incomplete and so I decided to muddy the waters a little. I guessed that no-one in the hall was in a position to correct me.

So, what then?” “I’d call for help. The problem is too big for our forces alone – we’d need the Yanks. And they’d come because they wouldn’t want the problem to spread beyond our borders – and don’t forget that all our borders are sea borders. So, the infection could potentially be stopped from spreading overseas if enough effort is put into the problem while it is still in Australia. Block up the air and sea ports, for starters.” Paul agreed that this made sense: “But where are all the Yanks?” “They’d still be coming,” I said. “By and large, it takes time to gear up for a war – even one like this. And don’t forget – unlike us – their best troops are still bogged down in Vietnam. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, 37and then was a widow until she was eighty-four. The Boy Jesus at the Temple 41Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover. 42When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom. 43After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. 44Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. 45When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. 46After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. 48When his parents saw him, they were astonished. Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court? 7Are they not the ones who are blaspheming the noble name of him to whom you belong? 8If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing right. 9But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers. 10For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. 11For he who said, “You shall not commit adultery,” also said, “You shall not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker. 12Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom, 13because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment. Faith and Deeds 14What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? 15Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. 16If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? 17In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. 18But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.” Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds. 19You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder. 20You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless? 21Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? 22You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. 23And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called God’s friend. 24You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone. 25In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction? 26As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

REVELATION 21 The New Heaven and the New Earth 1 I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The first heaven and the first earth had disappeared, and so had the sea. 2 Then I saw New Jerusalem, the holy city, coming down from God in heaven. It was like a bride dressed in her wedding gown and ready to meet her husband. 3 I heard a loud voice shout from the throne: God's home is now with his people. He will live with them, and they will be his own. Yes, God will make his home among his people. 4 He will wipe all tears from their eyes, and there will be no more death, suffering, crying, or pain. These things of the past are gone forever. 5Then the one sitting on the throne said: I am making everything new. Write down what I have said. My words are true and can be trusted. 6 Everything is finished! I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will freely give water from the life-giving fountain to everyone who is thirsty. 7 All who win the victory will be given these blessings. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 8But I will tell you what will happen to cowards and to everyone who is unfaithful or dirty-minded or who murders or is sexually immoral or uses witchcraft or worships idols or tells lies. They will be thrown into that lake of fire and burning sulfur. This is the second death. The New Jerusalem 9I saw one of the seven angels who had the bowls filled with the seven last terrible troubles. The angel came to me and said, “Come on! I will show you the one who will be the bride and wife of the Lamb.” 10 Then with the help of the Spirit, he took me to the top of a very high mountain. There he showed me the holy city of Jerusalem coming down from God in heaven. 11The glory of God made the city bright. It was dazzling and crystal clear like a precious jasper stone. 12 The city had a high and thick wall with twelve gates, and each one of them was guarded by an angel. On each of the gates was written the name of one of the twelve tribes of Israel. 13Three of these gates were on the east, three were on the north, three more were on the south, and the other three were on the west. 14The city was built on twelve foundation stones. On each of the stones was written the name of one of the Lamb's twelve apostles. 15 The angel who spoke to me had a gold measuring stick to measure the city and its gates and its walls. 16The city was shaped like a cube, because it was just as high as it was wide. When the angel measured the city, it was about 2,400 kilometers high and 2,400 kilometers wide. 17Then the angel measured the wall, and by our measurements it was about 60 meters high. 18 The wall was built of jasper, and the city was made of pure gold, clear as crystal. 19Each of the twelve foundations was a precious stone. The first was jasper, the second was sapphire, the third was agate, the fourth was emerald, 20the fifth was onyx, the sixth was carnelian, the seventh was chrysolite, the eighth was beryl, the ninth was topaz, the tenth was chrysoprase, the eleventh was jacinth, and the twelfth was amethyst. 21Each of the twelve gates was a solid pearl. The streets of the city were made of pure gold, clear as crystal. 22I did not see a temple there. The Lord God All-Powerful and the Lamb were its temple. 23 And the city did not need the sun or the moon. The glory of God was shining on it, and the Lamb was its light. 24 Nations will walk by the light of that city, and kings will bring their riches there. 25 Its gates are always open during the day, and night never comes. 26The glorious treasures of nations will be brought into the city. 27 But nothing unworthy will be allowed to enter. No one who is dirty-minded or who tells lies will be there. Only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life will be in the city.
