He started to make little grunting noises and then, with a roar and a violent sweep of his hand, scattered the deck across the floor. He put his face up close to mine and roared angrily once more – and then retreated to his makeshift bed and turned his back on me. “That went well,” I thought to myself, believing the opposite. I remained seated (and stunned) on the floor – but, within a short time, started to reconsider what had just happened. “If the cards truly meant nothing to him,” I wondered, “why the sudden display of anger?” Why the pointed retreat from me? That was not mere boredom or irritation. Had the cards triggered some painful memory? Was he suddenly aware of what he had now lost? I would have to wait and see. I was not going to get any more out of him today.

“‘Spy’? Is there a spy?” I thought. “Who would that be?” It took a minute or two for my woolly-headed self to realize that the only person whose blood they could be baying for was the sower of the seeds of doubt: me! Oh dear. Dragged to the scaffold by the mob when I could hardly stand on my own two feet. This was not entirely what I had hoped or planned for. Then, ‘The Cavalry’ arrived – almost literally. Ingrid and a U.S. Sergeant burst into my room, having vociferously ordered the infirmary guards to stand aside. “Get your goddammed stuff, soldier – and be quick about it,” ordered the Yankee Sergeant. “You’re leaving now – unless you want to be lynched by your fellow countrymen.” (How nice of him to call me ‘soldier’, I thought.) “Move it!” he screamed in my face. I still don’t know his name – but, evidently, he’d been impressed by what I’d had to say at the lecture and believed that ‘his boys’ had been lured to Australia under false pretences. Perhaps Gately and Swooper had spoken to him. In any case, it seemed he considered that my life might be worth saving. I tried to stand once again but my legs buckled underneath me after a few steps. Ingrid, whom I noticed was dishevelled and out of uniform, turned and screamed: “Guard!” One of the three goons, confused and disorientated, came running into the room. Ingrid pointed to me, now lying on the floor. “Pick him up and follow us!” He did. The brutish bastard was surprisingly strong – but, then again, I had lost a lot of weight and condition since arriving at ‘Pucka’. So, I was no great load to carry. Soon, I found myself flung roughly into the back tray of a jeep. It had been parked at the side of the parade ground. Brawling troops surrounded us on all sides but none paid us any attention – there was just too much brawling that needed still to be done.

“Good morning, gentlemen,” he said, with a broad smile. (Yuck – again.) “We have a few little, shall we say, ‘games’ to play this morning,” he continued. Then he turned to Ingrid and ordered: “Doctor, shave their heads and apply the electrodes, if you would be so kind.” “Electrodes”? That didn’t sound very promising. What was left of my afro was roughly shaven – David’s hair, too. I didn’t really care much about this but David grumbled and moaned enormously. (I wondered idly whether all zombies were such whingers.) I hadn’t previously noticed that he – or any other zombie, for that matter – took any particular pride in their locks. Indeed, all the zombies that I’d met seemed to make it a badge of honour to clot their hair up with as much dried blood and congealed gore as they could. It was just the indignity of the thing, I suppose. Soon, my newly-bald head was covered with shiny, stick-on electrode pads – carefully placed on me by the tasty (?) Ingrid. The electrodes were then attached to an ancient-looking EEG (electroencephalogram) in order to measure my brain waves. Ingrid and the Captain then started to take readings from the cathode ray tube. Lots of lovely wiggly lines being traced across the screen. What did it mean? Dunno. I suppose it meant my brain was working. Beyond that? Ask someone else. They did this for a while and made a whole bunch of fairly boring and unintelligible (to me, at least) remarks. Then it was David’s turn. Same deal: carefully placed, stick-on electrodes all over his bald cranium, hook up to EEG, read out screen. Result? A screen full of flat-line tracings. Not even a faint wobble on any line. Not the slightest tremble. “This man is dead,” observed Ingrid. (What a genius!) “Hmm,” responded the Captain. (Another genius.)

The Corporal was, of course, correct on both counts – neither Ingrid nor the U.S. Sergeant, both theoretically superior in rank, had any authority to order him about. Stalemate. I could see the Sergeant was going to move – even more – into bullying mode. I judged that it wouldn’t work on the Corporal – who obviously knew very well what was the proper chain of command. So, it was time for me to stand up and be counted. I crawled from the back of the first jeep and stood uncertainly beside it. I called out weakly to the guards: “Gentlemen, I’m the reason these officers are here. I’m the one who has caused the rioting over on the parade ground ...” I paused, giddy from standing, before completing my thought. “ ... If you don’t let these guys lock me up for my own protection, you’re going to have a lynching on your hands. I suspect the Camp Commandant will not be well pleased when he has to explain to his superiors why my body is swinging from the flagpole in the morning – when you could have saved him the trouble simply by obeying the orders of the officers now standing in front of you. So, what do you think?” Both the Sergeant and Ingrid turned, as one, and gaped at me in amazement. (Why hadn’t they thought of that?) The guards knew who I was and why I was being held in the camp – it seemed everyone did. The Corporal looked at the Sergeant. “You wanna lock this guy up? Why didn’t you say so in the first place? That’s easy – no orders required.” And, with that, I joined the Sergeant and Ingrid, the guards stood aside and we entered the building without further ado. Then the Sergeant briefly turned back and spoke to the now-confused driver of the second jeep – who was apparently in on the overall plan and had been listening to everything that had just been said: “You’re dismissed, soldier. I will see you later.” The driver of the second jeep, briefly, looked puzzled.

There were two viewing windows to the chamber. I guessed that I was the show. At one window, stood what would now be considered an ancient video camera of considerable bulk. My ‘show’ was to be recorded. The chair into which David was securely tied was placed at the other viewing port. He had a perfect view of me – and I of him. A second ancient video camera was pointed at David. I was not hooked up to an EEG machine this time but, curiously, David was. He had all the electrodes stuck to his shaven scalp – just like last time – and these led by wire back to a screen. But for me? Nothing. What did this remind me of? Suddenly, I became very anxious and loudly demanded to be let out of the chamber. Could they hear me? Would it have mattered if they could? David could see my anxiety and started to roar. None of this mattered to the Captain. Did Ingrid know what was about to happen? I screamed for mercy – in a flash, I had remembered what all this was about. I had seen the horrific archival film from Auschwitz. This guy really was Mengele’s successor and I was about to die an agonising death. Why? Was there a reason? “Start the vacuum pump,” he ordered loudly – and I heard the electric motor thump into action. Fuck! I looked through the window at David – he was no use. He was just complaining, as usual. Dr Slimy-smile was peering intently at me from behind one of the cameras. Ingrid was not visible to me but, no doubt, she was somewhere in the background. Soon the air began to thin and my breathing became more rapid. Just as with a mountain climber’s body, my body was trying to compensate for the lack of oxygen by making me take in more air. More air meant more oxygen. It would only work for a short time – I knew that.

FLIGHT I was dozing in the infirmary. It was around midnight. Outside, on the parade ground, there was a heck of a commotion going on. The sounds of fist upon face and boot upon other body parts could be clearly heard. There were soldiers screaming and yelling, Aussies and Yanks – name-calling and dire threats. Others vainly trying to contain the brawling. Orders disobeyed. Whistles of MP’s. Soon, the whole camp had turned out onto the parade ground and there were hundreds of troops fighting an extremely vigorous pitched battle. Suddenly, I was wide awake – adrenalin does that. At first, I simply thought: “What is going on?” But then I guessed that the seeds I had planted in the minds of the Doughboys might now be bearing fruit. Seeds of doubt. Seeds of conflict. Young men, decent guys, were both injuring and being injured out there, on the parade ground. Maybe, I wasn’t such a nice person, after all. But, nice person or not, I needed to use the commotion that I had triggered to make my escape. In a panic, I undid the bindings which had been holding me to the bed – actually, I could have done this at any time but had been too ill to even bother trying. I swung my legs off the bed and put my feet on the floor for the first time in some days. I tried to stand. Shit! I was still very weak from the torture and flopped back, breathless, onto the bed. What to do? I couldn’t let this confusion pass without trying to take advantage. This golden opportunity would not come again. From outside, I could hear raised voices, Australian voices, saying things like: “Kill the fuckin’ spy! Get the zombie spy! Kill the little mongrel.” (And so on, like that.)

Maybe, somehow, it was I who was feeling David’s pain. Then again, perhaps I was just registering my upset at what I was seeing – and being completely helpless to stop. “That’s given me an idea,” said the smiling Mengele. “An idea for a follow-up experiment, consequential on the results of the first.” And, with that, his gaze fell upon my own body. He ordered my clothes to be torn from me and stepped evenly towards me, cattle-prod still in his hand. I well remember the jolt of the first application of the rod to my skin – on the forehead, as it happens. And I also remember hearing my own screams echoing in that bare-walled room. But I only got to know (later) how often, and where, the prod was applied to me by the scorch marks it left on my skin. (I had blacked out pretty early in the process.) It looked like I got about the same treatment as I saw David get. It was some minutes, or some tens of minutes perhaps, after the last application of the prod – and therefore after Ingrid’s last data point – that my mind rose once again into consciousness. The first thing I heard was Mengele’s voice: “Remarkable. Truly remarkable.” (Apparently, the word ‘remarkable’ was his favourite descriptor.) A conversation followed between him and Doctor Ingrid. I was still too groggy to take in all of it but the salient point of it was that, once David had seen me being tortured, his EEG readout had suddenly ceased flat-lining and had shown unmistakable signs of neuronal activity. There was apparently nothing at all normal in the patterns recorded – some of the lines had remained completely flat – but there was no doubt that a discernible pattern was to be observed (but only while I was being subjected to serious torture.) “I hope this is not an experiment that those two need to replicate too often,” I thought. My skin felt like it was on fire and David’s continued roaring was adding to my headache. I passed out once again and did not wake until we were both back in our concrete cell.

In the distance, I could hear dogs barking. This did not overly trouble me because these dogs would have been just the normal guard dogs at the base. There had not been time to get any bloodhounds up from Melbourne yet. So, unless David or I were stupid enough to make ourselves highly scent-visible, the guard dogs would not find our hide-out before we had moved on. Even so, I knew that I now needed to stay put. Wandering about in the bush at night was likely to attract the attention of any sort of dog. David would just have to fend for himself. I spent an anxious night lying awake on the cold, earthen floor, deep within the tunnel complex, waiting and wondering – just like parents do when their teenagers start going out at night without them. (Though David was hardly a typical teenager.) Morning came – still no David in sight. “Where have you gotten to, ya little flesh-eating bastard?” I said aloud. I waited till mid-day once again before I could no longer stand the anxiety and suspense. I crept towards the mouth of the tunnel and, after listening for a time, ventured a peek out of the entrance. Nothing. There was no sign that the searchers had passed by. That was a relief, of sorts. I waited a further time – an hour or two maybe – and listened. It was a very still, summer’s day. Not even the familiar sound of eucalypt leaves rustling in the breeze. In the bush, in those conditions, any loud sound will carry for miles. If there had been any trucks rumbling along the Scrub Hill road, I would have heard them. If there had been any dogs still searching, I would have heard their barking. There were none. So, what did this mean? Perhaps the search had moved on elsewhere. Perhaps it had been suspended until proper tracker dogs had arrived from Melbourne. Or, more likely, there were now troops stationed in bush ‘hides’, just watching and waiting until I emerged somewhere in the area. They probably had orders to shoot on sight because, after all, this was being treated as a wartime operation. I couldn’t take the risk of emerging just yet. That would have made no sense. I was comparatively safe where I was – for the moment. David would have to fend for himself (unless, as I worried, he had already been picked off by some sniper hiding in the bush – though I had heard no gunfire at all.)

I stand on trial because of the hope of the resurrection of the dead.” 7When he said this, a dispute broke out between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the assembly was divided. 8(The Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, and that there are neither angels nor spirits, but the Pharisees believe all these things.) 9There was a great uproar, and some of the teachers of the law who were Pharisees stood up and argued vigorously. “We find nothing wrong with this man,” they said. “What if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?” 10The dispute became so violent that the commander was afraid Paul would be torn to pieces by them. He ordered the troops to go down and take him away from them by force and bring him into the barracks. 11The following night the Lord stood near Paul and said, “Take courage! As you have testified about me in Jerusalem, so you must also testify in Rome.” The Plot to Kill Paul 12The next morning some Jews formed a conspiracy and bound themselves with an oath not to eat or drink until they had killed Paul. 13More than forty men were involved in this plot. 14They went to the chief priests and the elders and said, “We have taken a solemn oath not to eat anything until we have killed Paul. 15Now then, you and the Sanhedrin petition the commander to bring him before you on the pretext of wanting more accurate information about his case. We are ready to kill him before he gets here.” 16But when the son of Paul’s sister heard of this plot, he went into the barracks and told Paul. 17Then Paul called one of the centurions and said, “Take this young man to the commander; he has something to tell him.” 18So he took him to the commander. The centurion said, “Paul, the prisoner, sent for me and asked me to bring this young man to you because he has something to tell you.” 19The commander took the young man by the hand, drew him aside and asked, “What is it you want to tell me?” 20He said: “Some Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul before the Sanhedrin tomorrow on the pretext of wanting more accurate information about him. 21Don’t give in to them, because more than forty of them are waiting in ambush for him. They have taken an oath not to eat or drink until they have killed him. They are ready now, waiting for your consent to their request.” 22The commander dismissed the young man with this warning: “Don’t tell anyone that you have reported this to me.” Paul Transferred to Caesarea 23Then he called two of his centurions and ordered them, “Get ready a detachment of two hundred soldiers, seventy horsemen and two hundred spearmen to go to Caesarea at nine tonight. 24Provide horses for Paul so that he may be taken safely to Governor Felix.” 25He wrote a letter as follows: 26Claudius Lysias, To His Excellency, Governor Felix: Greetings. 27This man was seized by the Jews and they were about to kill him, but I came with my troops and rescued him, for I had learned that he is a Roman citizen. 28I wanted to know why they were accusing him, so I brought him to their Sanhedrin. 29I found that the accusation had to do with questions about their law, but there was no charge against him that deserved death or imprisonment. 30When I was informed of a plot to be carried out against the man, I sent him to you at once. I also ordered his accusers to present to you their case against him. 31So the soldiers, carrying out their orders, took Paul with them during the night and brought him as far as Antipatris. 32The next day they let the cavalry go on with him, while they returned to the barracks. 33When the cavalry arrived in Caesarea, they delivered the letter to the governor and handed Paul over to him. 34The governor read the letter and asked what province he was from. Learning that he was from Cilicia, 35he said, “I will hear your case when your accusers get here.” Then he ordered that Paul be kept under guard in Herod’s palace.

The Escape to Egypt 13After they had left, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph and said, “Herod will be looking for the child in order to kill him. So get up, take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you to leave.” 14Joseph got up, took the child and his mother, and left during the night for Egypt, 15where he stayed until Herod died. This was done to make what the Lord had said through the prophet come true, “I called my Son out of Egypt.” The Killing of the Children 16When Herod realized that the visitors from the east had tricked him, he was furious. He gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its neighbourhood who were two years old and younger — this was done in accordance with what he had learned from the visitors about the time when the star had appeared. 17In this way what the prophet Jeremiah had said came true: 18“A sound is heard in Ramah, the sound of bitter weeping. Rachel is crying for her children; she refuses to be comforted, for they are dead.” The Return from Egypt 19After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt 20and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother, and go back to the land of Israel, because those who tried to kill the child are dead.” 21So Joseph got up, took the child and his mother, and went back to Israel. 22But when Joseph heard that Archelaus had succeeded his father Herod as king of Judea, he was afraid to go there. He was given more instructions in a dream, so he went to the province of Galilee 23and made his home in a town named Nazareth. The Question about the Sabbath (Mk 2.23–28; Lk 6.1–5) 1Not long afterwards Jesus was walking through some cornfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry, so they began to pick ears of corn and eat the grain. 2When the Pharisees saw this, they said to Jesus, “Look, it is against our Law for your disciples to do this on the Sabbath!” 3Jesus answered, “Have you never read what David did that time when he and his men were hungry? 4He went into the house of God, and he and his men ate the bread offered to God, even though it was against the Law for them to eat it — only the priests were allowed to eat that bread. 5Or have you not read in the Law of Moses that every Sabbath the priests in the Temple actually break the Sabbath law, yet they are not guilty? 6I tell you that there is something here greater than the Temple. 7The scripture says, ‘It is kindness that I want, not animal sacrifices.’ If you really knew what this means, you would not condemn people who are not guilty; 8for the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” The Man with a Paralysed Hand (Mk 3.1–6; Lk 6.6–11) 9Jesus left that place and went to a synagogue, 10where there was a man who had a paralysed hand. Some people were there who wanted to accuse Jesus of doing wrong, so they asked him, “Is it against our Law to heal on the Sabbath?” 11Jesus answered, “What if one of you has a sheep and it falls into a deep hole on the Sabbath? Will you not take hold of it and lift it out? 12And a human being is worth much more than a sheep! So then, our Law does allow us to help someone on the Sabbath.” 13Then he said to the man with the paralysed hand, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and it became well again, just like the other one. 14Then the Pharisees left and made plans to kill Jesus. God's Chosen Servant 15When Jesus heard about the plot against him, he went away from that place; and large crowds followed him. He healed all those who were ill 16and gave them orders not to tell others about him. 17He did this so as to make what God had said through the prophet Isaiah come true: 18“Here is my servant, whom I have chosen, the one I love, and with whom I am pleased. I will send my Spirit upon him, and he will announce my judgement to the nations. 19He will not argue or shout, or make loud speeches in the streets. 20He will not break off a bent reed, or put out a flickering lamp. He will persist until he causes justice to triumph, 21and in him all peoples will put their hope.” Jesus and Beelzebul (Mk 3.20–30; Lk 11.14–23) 22Then some people brought to Jesus a man who was blind and could not talk because he had a demon. Jesus healed the man, so that he was able to talk and see. 23The crowds were all amazed at what Jesus had done. “Could he be the Son of David?” they asked. 24When the Pharisees heard this, they replied, “He drives out demons only because their ruler Beelzebul gives him power to do so.” 25Jesus knew what they were thinking, so he said to them, “Any country that divides itself into groups which fight each other will not last very long. And any town or family that divides itself into groups which fight each other will fall apart. 26So if one group is fighting another in Satan's kingdom, this means that it is already divided into groups and will soon fall apart! 27You say that I drive out demons because Beelzebul gives me the power to do so. Well, then, who gives your followers the power to drive them out? What your own followers do proves that you are wrong! 28No, it is not Beelzebul, but God's Spirit, who gives me the power to drive out demons, which proves that the Kingdom of God has already come upon you. 29“No one can break into a strong man's house and take away his belongings unless he first ties up the strong man; then he can plunder his house. 30“Anyone who is not for me is really against me; anyone who does not help me gather is really scattering. 31And so I tell you that people can be forgiven any sin and any evil thing they say; but whoever says evil things against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. 32Anyone who says something against the Son of Man can be forgiven; but whoever says something against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven — now or ever. A Tree and its Fruit (Lk 6.43–45) 33“To have good fruit you must have a healthy tree; if you have a poor tree, you will have bad fruit. A tree is known by the kind of fruit it bears. 34You snakes — how can you say good things when you are evil?
