As the first woman to speak in the series, she made a passionate plea for the Caribbean environment and stressed the existential threat of climate change to the region.

Sometimes called existential risks, these include natural disasters —such as asteroid or comet impact, supervolcanoes, the death of the sun, or global warming— and they also include man-made catastrophes —such as nuclear war or bioterrorism.

If this sounds like a long list of nitpicks, it’s because ... well, it is. For all the existential battles that have been fought over Windows versus Mac, there’s little to distinguish the two on any important level. The platforms have converged on everything but aesthetics and personal preferences. Both have a locked-down store which power users ignore; both are fighting for relevance in a world of web apps and mobile-first design; both feel the weight of versions past sitting on their shoulders.

Kathmandu’s politicians, busy with the existential matters of constitution-making and the peace process, and held hostage by simultaneous, multi-layered socio-political challenges, are resigned to accept Beijing’s directives. ENTER THE MAOISTS Beijing craves stability in its neighborhood, democratic governance being incidental in its reckoning. Since the early 1990s, Beijing’s policymakers have followed with even some disdain Nepal’s experiment with pluralism. At the same time, having chaperoned their society into capitalist-communism as defined by Deng Xiaoping, Beijing’s commissars and generals were not pleased when the Maobaadi started their ‘people’s war’ in 1996.

Political parties and groups pressing ethnic and regional agendas have mushroomed and there is a perceived increase in organised crime and political violence. But new groups offer no existential threat to the political system - they largely work within it. None of them challenges the state in the way the Maoists did. The use of violence is ordered and bounded by the increasingly institutionalised involvement of mainstream parties, police and administration officials. The only real risk of serious unrest stems from the gathering backlash against federalism and programs for political inclusion. The transition to federalism will present the biggest challenge, and conflict risk, of the near future.

The urban Tīj enacts a carnivalesque de-bunking of the māita’s “halo” in two different ways. Firstly, in the urban Tīj there is almost a snapping of the umbilical cord of Tīj with the māita. Women’s construction of alternative celebratory spaces in party venues, in auditoria, in each other’s houses undermines the site of the māita as an indispensable existential signifier. It is difficult to imagine the māita without the Law of the Father: going home on Tīj is going to the home of the Father. In conducting celebrations in auditoria and friends’ homes, women move away from the phallocentricity of the māita rendering it less important. The birth of the māita as a space is predicated upon the symbolic and ritual death of the daughter in marriage.
