The older part of the city with its center in Asan, is a maze of tiny backstreets strewn with a temple or small shrine every 50 meters or so. Kathmandu is a city where ancient traditions rub shoulders with the latest technological advances. However, it is the grandeur of the past that enchants the visitor whose gaze may linger on an exquisitely carved wooden, window frame, an 18th century bronze sculpture or the spiritually uplifting stupa of Boudhanath.

]]> Stefano Lattante /I spent four days in Pokhara where I went trekking, chilled out by the lakeside and visited the famous Stupa from which it is possible to admire the entire city. Pokhara, second biggest city in Nepal with 414,000 people, is located six hours bus from Kathmandu. Pokhara is also renowned for Annapurna and the Fishtail, mountains that frame the city making the landscape incredibly majestic as if it was painted. Annapurna is also a famous destination for trekkers that with, the Everest, is the second most visited base camp in Nepal. During my two days trekking I have chatted with many people that I met on my way, that gave me a taste of their experiences in Nepal. I talked with loner travellers, groups friends, couples and families from all over the world.

Nestled within a large valley, it enjoys a pleasant climate second to none and is a relatively safe place to live. Like any big city, Kathmandu has seen rapid expansion in the last decade and the hustle and bustle is typical, yet the people remain as refreshingly friendly as ever. The old, fabulous palaces, the superbly crafted pagodas and the monumental stupas are reminders of the Golden age of architecture in Nepal. They stand testimony to the artistic genius of the Newar craftsmen, the original inhabitants of the valley, whose skills were championed by the Malla kings and appreciated even by Mongol rulers of 18th Century China. And rightfully, the Durbar Square, Swoyambhunath, Boudhanath and Pashupatinath have been enlisted as UNESCO World Heritage Monuments.

The dedicatory inscriptions at Sanchi unmistakably show that the prosperity of the Buddhist establishment here was, to a great extent, due to the piety of the rich mercantile community of Vidisa. The nearness of the city, the strategic situation of which – at the confluence of two rivers, the Betwa and the Bes, as well as on two important trade routes resulted in a great overflow of wealth, was in no small measure responsible for the flourishing condition of Sanchi even when the empire of the Mauryas was a thing of the past. After a temporary setback following the break-up of the Maurya empire, when the stupa of Asoka was damaged, the cause of the Buddhist establishment of Kakanaya was taken up with a feverish zeal by the monks and the laity alike, not a negligible percentage of the latter being formed by visitors of Vidisa for trade and other purposes.

The plan, completed in 1978 by the renowned Japanese architect Kenzo Tange, will transform three square miles of land into a sacred place of gardens, pools, buildings, and groves. Covering an area of 564sq.km.the valley is 1,348m. above sea level. The artistic brilliance of the Newar inhabitants is showcased by the exquisite wood carvings, the skillfully crafted statues and statuettes and the architectural marvels: the pagodas and stupas. The many ancient sites within the Kathmandu Valley which are identified with major Buddhist caityas or stupas such as Swayambhu Hill, Buddha and Cabahil, Kathmandu and the four “Ashoka” stupas of Patan not to mention the almost two hundred examples of stone caityas dating from the Licchavi Period, testify to the widespread antiquity of caitya worship. One can imagine that this practice in its earliest incarnation in the Valley was analogous to the worship of stones, which probably had its origin with the early, tribal inhabitants of the Valley long before we the coming of the Licchavis.

The religious fervour found its expression in vigorous building activity about the middle of the second century B.C., during which the Sungas were ruling and which saw the stone encasing and enlargement of the stupa of Asoka, the erection of balustrades round its ground, berm, stairway and harmika, the reconstruction of Temple 40 and the building of Stupas 2 and 3. The same intense religious aspiration and creative forces continued unabated in the next century as well, when, during the supremacy of the Satavahanas, new embellishments, in the form of elaborately-carved gateways, were added to Stapas 1 and 3.

The Pokhara-Lekhnath metropolis has set aside Rs 500,000 in the current fiscal year to open the track to Anadu village from the World Peace Stupa. The metropolis did not enquire while preparing the budget whether the due process had been completed before opening the track in Raniban across the lake. Deubahadur Gurung, chairman of the consumer committee formed to build the road, admitted to have opened the track by felling trees. He added that the metropolis had been requested for additional budget. Encroachment of Phewa Lake in the name of building roads is happening in every nook and corner of the natural resource. The road leading from Kinarpame to the Panchase hills towards the source of Phewa water has been widened. Rocks and soil falling from the structure get directly into the lake.

Eighty years later, close to death, the Buddha speaks of Lumbini, “After I am no more, O Ananda, men of belief will visit—with faithful curiosity and devotion—to the four places—where I was born, attained enlightenment, gave the first sermons, and where I passed into paranibbana.” True to his prediction, within three hundred years of the Buddha’s death, stupas and temples were built at his birthplace, the nativity scene carved in stone, and many pilgrims came to pay homage, including the Indian emperor Ashoka, the Buddhist monarch who replaced the sword with the Dharma. Ashoka visited in 249 B.C.E., constructing a pillar with the Rock Edict declaring, “Here the Buddha was born.”

The lost city of Kapilvastu was identified as Tilaura Kot until 1898, when W. Peppe found several relic caskets inside an old stupa in Piprahwa believed to contain the relics of Buddha. On the lid of the smaller vasean inscription was incised mentioning Sakyamuni and Sakya. But thc date and the translation of the inscription in old Prakrit and Brahmi script were obscure and inconclusive. There was considerable difference of opinion regarding the date and the meaning of the inscription. The paleographic dating varied from 6′′‘ Century BC to 3′” Century AD by various scholars. Different scholars interpreted the translation of the inscription differently.

Legend has it that the history of the Valley began with the draining of an ancient lake by an Enlightened Being to reveal the Valley and a lotus flower was transformed into the hill and the shining light became the stupa itself. Swarms of pilgrims and red-clad monks circle the complex, spinning the prayer wheels, while the scores of monkeys that give the temple its nickname, Monkey Temple, prance about in irreverent groups. Interestingly the temple complex is scattered with shrines and statues of Buddhist and Hindu deities and the assortment of pilgrims from both faiths characterises the country’s unique religious harmony.

The Raniban road has imperiled the World Peace Stupa, said Uttam Buddhacharya, secretary at the Stupa Committee. “They have run the road over foot trails and ponds,” said Buddhacharya. “The road dug below the stupa has made landslides more imminent.” In the rainy season of 2014, a massive landslide that cut rock right from the stupa yard on the slope above the lake had put both the stupa and the lake in peril. The mud slid into the lake. The rock fall before the road was built was attributed to a fragile geography.

In fact, the Nepali delegation had been pleased by the sight of the great White Stupa, devised by Araniko. On returning to Nepal, I wrote an essay on the title, “Nepali Sculptor Araniko and His Artistry” which was published in a book titled Puratatv: Ek Rochak Katha—Archeology: An Interesting Story. Since then, I developed more curiosity for additional information and research on Araniko. Later, due to the immense generosity of poet Kedar Man ‘Byathit’, I was sent to Peking, once again. I would like to express my deep thankfulness to poet ‘Byathit’. I was assigned to teach Nepali language to Chinese students at the Kwamposuyena (Peking Broadcasting Institute).
