Body sizes of the colony imperator and constrictor's agree with this cline. the geographic variation in size contrasts with Bergmann's rule that endotherms increase in body size with altitude or latitude (mayr 1956, 1963). a physiological explanation of reducing heat loss through a smaller surface to volume ratio at lower temperatures has been proposed as the mechanism for this clinal increase in size. a survey of mammals and birds supports Bergmann's rule for homeotherms (meiri and Dayan 2003), i.e. in relatively cooler surroundings. ray (1960) proposed that Bergmann's rule may apply to poikilotherm vertebrates as well because they mature at larger sizes in higher latitudes. atkinson (1994) found a reduction in ectotherm body size with higher rearing temperature in 84% of the cases investigated.
