Of course it touched on primal fears; of course the (fairy tale?) rescue of the young girl gladdened people's hearts; of course watching the suffering of others releases cathartic energy – but many stories, both invented and factual, can score points this way, the secret of this story lay and lies elsewhere, namely where for a long time it remained hidden to most people: at the surface.
