A third study, conducted in 2017 by Finland's Aalto University, determined hydropower facilities along the upper reaches of the Mekong — called the Lancang River in China — are causing widespread ecological problems downstream. Since 2011, hydropower facilities in China contributed to major increases in dry season water flows and decreased flows during the wet season, the study said. The annual flooding in the wet season helps ecosystems in the Mekong, which is one of the world's largest inland fisheries.
