It is a multidisciplinary science, which draws on the disciplines of limnology, oceanography, freshwater biology, marine biology, meteorology, conservation, ecology, population dynamics, economics and management to attempt to provide an integrated picture of fisheries. In some cases new disciplines have emerged, as in the case of bioeconomics and fisheries law. Fisheries science is typically taught in a university setting, and can be the focus of an undergraduate, master's or Ph.D. program.

IORA is a regional forum which promotes multifaceted cooperation of the 21 Indian Ocean Rim states from Australia to South East Asia, Central Asia, the Middle East, and Africa under the 6 areas of cooperation, namely, (1) Maritime Safety and Security, (2) Fisheries Management, (3) Trade and Investment Facilitation, (4) Disaster Risk Management, (5) Academic, Science and Technology Cooperation, and (6) Tourism and Cultural Exchanges. IORA also gives priority to Blue Economy and Women's Economic Empowerment as two cross-cutting issues

Khun Chalatip Junchompoo, Marine Biologist of the Marine and Coastal Resources Research and Development Center; Dr. Narongpan Chunram, Lecturer of the Faculty of Science and Technology, Chiang Mai Rajabhat University; Khun Padinya Aree, Trash Hero; and Ajarn Sarawut Siriwong, Lecturer in Marine Science, Burapha University, Chantaburi Campus, participated in IVLP "Environmental Issues" from November 5-23, 2018 in Washington, DC; New York, NY; Boston, MA; Corpus Christi, TX; and San Francisco, CA. They had the opportunity to examine state and federal environmental protection laws; to examine fisheries industry, including sustainable fisheries; to explore marine biology, biodiversity, and ecology conservation programs; and to explore the role of NG Os (science, tools and volunteers) in clean oceans and educational efforts.
