The festival’s first edition seeks to capture the spirit of Nicanor Zabaleta (San Sebastián, Spain, 1907 – San Juan, Puerto Rico, 1993), and continue his journey of creating a singular Latin American harp trend that joins the lore of Folk harp – which has been taught for four hundred years without a single score – with the European teachings developed on the academic harp.

Ya en los años 50 del siglo pasado el gran Nicanor Zabaleta habló en alguno de sus escritos de la existencia de arpas de dos órdenes en el barroco español, incluso grabó obras renacentistas del tratado de Venegas del siglo XVI en arpa moderna, pero quien realmente empezó la recuperación del instrumento en si, cuando se pudo escuchar, conocer su repertorio y cuando se estudiaron las arpas originales, se debió a un equipo que en lo años 70 comenzaron a investigar sobre el pasado glorioso del arpa en España: Pérez Arroyo y Cristina Bordas con sus artículos sobre el arpa de dos órdenes, Nuria LLopis, la que fue mi maestra, en la interpretación práctica, Pedro Llopis en la construcción de los instrumentos sacando planos y haciendo exhaustivos exámenes de las arpas originales.
Even in the 50’s of last century, the great Nicanor Zabaleta spoke in some of his writings about the existence of cross-strung harps in the Spanish Baroque. He even recorded Renaissance pieces about the Treaty of Benegas form the 16th century with a modern harp; but the people who really started the recuperation process of the instrument itself, who made possible we could listen to it, know about its repertoire and studied the original harps... all of this was thanks to a team which, in the 70’s started to investigate about the glorious past of the harp in Spain: Perez Arroyo and Cristina Bordas with their articles about the cross-strung harp; Nuria Llopis, who was my teacher, in the practical interpretation; Pedro Llopis with the building of the instruments, drawing blueprints and making exhaustive inspections of the original harps.
