Chesterfield Inlet is a narrow, fiordlike arm of the northwest coast of HUDSON BAY that stretches 160 km inland to the THELON R. It marks a physiographic divide along the bay, separating a narrow, rocky coastal plain backing onto a plain and hilly area to the north, from an enormous area of low relief, with poorly developed drainage farther south.

In the 1730s Christopher Middleton* and Arthur Dobbs read Scroggs’ journal, and argued that this opening might be the entrance of a passage to the Pacific-an illusion which lured several expeditions to the region until Chesterfield Inlet and the nearby coastline were surveyed in detail.
