「건강과 질병」(Health and Disease) 책에서는 색맹이 “여성에 의해 유전되지만 대개 한 세대씩 걸러서 남성에게 나타나는” 것으로서 “반성(伴性)” 유전성 장애라고 정의한다.
Health and Disease defines color blindness as a “sex-linked” genetic disorder “transmitted by females but usually turn[ing] up in alternate generations of males.”jw2019 jw2019
예를 들어 색각이 정상인 사람이 왼쪽에 있는 검사용 그림을 자연광이 비치는 곳에서 보면 42와 74를 보게 되지만, 가장 흔하게 나타나는 적록 색맹인 사람이 왼쪽의 그림을 보면 위의 그림에서는 아무것도 보지 못하고 아래의 그림에서는 21을 보게 될 수 있다.
For example, when viewing one of the test patterns in daylight, a person with normal vision should see the numbers 42 and 74 (at left), while someone having a red-green deficiency —the most common— may see no number at the top and 21 at the bottom.jw2019 jw2019
