In 1971 voegde Mory Kanté zich bij de muziekgroep The Rail Band, in eerste instantie als gitarist en balafonist, maar later ook als zanger.
In 1971 Kanté became a member of the Rail Band, in which Salif Keïta was a singer.

Salif Keita was jarenlang de eerste zanger van de Rail Band maar ook voor Mory Kanté en gitarist Djelimady Tounkara was deze periode de opmaat tot hun latere succes.
Salif Keita was the first singer of the Rail Band for many years, but for Mory Kanté and guitar player Djelimady Tounkara this period was also the beginning of their success.

In 1971 voegde Mory Kanté zich bij de muziekgroep The Rail Band, in eerste instantie als gitarist en balafonist, maar later ook als zanger. In 1978 verliet hij de groep.
In 1971 Kanté became a member of the Rail Band, in which Salif Keïta was a singer.[2] Keïta left the band in 1973, leaving Kanté as the singer.[2]

Ze zijn er dikwijls op aangewezen, in het openbaar als muzikant en entertainer, ter gelegenheid van religieuze en familie feesten en in de media voor toeristen op te treden. Veel bekende afro-popstars zoals Mory Kante en Salif Keita komen uit Griotsfamilies. Echter weinig griots lukt zo'n karriere.

Many wellknown Afro popstars like Mory Kante or Salif Keita are descendants of griot families but only few griots succeed in such a career.
