The period from the Russian conquest of Kazan in 1552 by Ivan the Terrible to the ascension of Catherine the Great in 1762 featured systematic Russian repression of Muslims through policies of exclusion and discrimination - as well as the destruction of Muslim culture by the elimination of outward manifestations of Islam such as mosques.

De openingsceremonie werd bijgewoond door ongeveer 17.000 personen en er waren delegaties uit 40 landen aanwezig. De Qolşärif-moskee werd gebouwd op de plek waar voor de Russische verovering van Kazan de belangrijkste moskee van het kanaat Kazan had gestaan.
Roughly 17,000 people gathered for the celebration. Delegations from forty countries attended the event. The facility was reconstructed on the site where presumably Kazan Khanate's principal mosque had been standing before 1552.
