A group of bacteria that are normally abundant in the intestinal tracts of human and other warm-blooded animals and are used as indicators (being measured as the number of individuals found per millilitre of water) when testing the sanitary quality of water.

Voor deze bacteriecategorieën bepaalt de richtlijn een maximaal toelaatbare concentratie van nul, zij het dat voor het totaal aantal colibacteriën een zekere speelruimte wordt gelaten: mits een voldoende aantal monsters wordt onderzocht, is het voldoende wanneer 95 % ervan niet is besmet.

16. Bij brief van 5 oktober 1999 stelden de Franse autoriteiten dat zij sedert het badseizoen van 1995 de metingen van de totale colibacteriën en de fecale colibacteriën hadden gestaakt en hadden vervangen door een doeltreffender methode, die huns inziens in overeenstemming was met de geest van de richtlijn en met de doelstelling om de gezondheid van zwemmers te beschermen.
