Hij studeerde aan de Universiteit van Praag en hij promoveerde in 1948 met het proefschrift Příspěvek k poznání filogenese a zoogeografie rodu Tymarcha Latr. (over de filogenese en zoögeografie van het geslacht Tymarcha).
Bechyně studied at the University of Prague, graduating in 1948 with a thesis titled "Příspěvek k poznání filogenese a zoogeography rodu Tymarcha Latr" (on the phylogeny and zoogeography of the genus Tymarcha).

In 1910 volgde hij Hubrecht op als hoogleraar zoölogie, vergelijkende anatomie en zoögeografie aan de Utrechtse universiteit.
In 1910 he succeeded Hubrecht as a professor of zoology, comparative anatomy and zoogeography at the university.

In de jaren '20 van de vorige eeuw was hij directeur van het Zoölogisch Museum van Artis in Amsterdam en later hoogleraar zoögeografie aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam.
In the 1920s he was director of the Zoological Museum of Artis in Amsterdam and later zoogeography professor at the University of Amsterdam.

Tijdens het midden van de jaren ‘80 werkte een Belgische doctoraatstudent, Benoit Mys (foto links), verbonden aan de Universiteit Antwerpen aan een proefschrift over de zoögeografie van reptielen uit Noord Papoea-Nieuw-Guinea.
During the mid 1980’s a Belgian PhD student, Benoit Mys associated with the University of Antwerp, was completing a PhD on the zoogeography of reptiles, mostly scincid lizards from North Papua New Guinea.
