Is the Commission aware that the number of smaller vessels, which are suitable for the network of small canals built since the 19th century, particularly in the Netherlands, Belgium and France, is rapidly declining, mainly because new vessels of less than 1 000 tons are no longer being built and many existing small vessels are being scrapped before reaching the age of 60, which would be their normal life expectancy, with the consequence that, in the absence of vessels of 800 tons or less, it is becoming necessary to convey 1 040 000 tons of goods by road, using 35 000 trucks, and in addition the disappearance of 80 % of vessels of up to 1 500 tons will lead to the use of a further 67 000 trucks?not-set not-set
