Jag röstade för resolutionen om EU-åtgärder när det gäller oljeborrning och oljeutvinning i Europa, eftersom jag anser att det är nödvändigt att förbättra säkerheten och arbetsförhållandena på oljeborrplattformar till havs inom Europeiska unionen för att förebygga miljökatastrofer som den som inträffade i Mexikanska golfen.
I voted in favour of the resolution on EU action on oil exploration and extraction in Europe, since I consider it necessary to enhance safety and working conditions on offshore oil platforms in the European Union with a view to preventing environmental disasters such as the one that occurred in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Barcelona Convention, in which France has been actively involved since 1976, aims to protect the Mediterranean's marine and coastal environment. The directive establishing the Natura 2000 network set out to preserve biodiversity in Europe, and the Rio Declaration issued at the 1992 Earth Summit includes a stipulation (principle No 2) that care should be taken to avoid damaging the environment when exploiting its resources. How then does the Commission intend to deal with the risks associated with oil drilling in the Mediterranean Sea?

Nonetheless, it is perfectly obvious that offshore drilling is a risky operation and every precautionary measure has to be taken: strengthening the principle of environmental liability, establishing a special European fund to be maintained by mandatory contributions from operators of offshore installations, especially when drilling is carried out in the Arctic under conditions of extreme cold and at great depths.
