Oltre i 2000 metri, degli attuali 3323, che segnano la vetta di questo monte, che Pindaro definì "Colonna del Cielo", i naturalisti collocano l'unico ambiente integro, dell'intera Sicilia, nel quale l'uomo è elemento estraneo, o al più, transitorio e nel quale, gli individui colonizzatori delle quote più basse dell'ambiente lavico, come l'istrice, la martora, la volpe, il picchio rosso e la coturnice, vivono e si riproducono, nell'incontaminato equilibrio della natura di questi luoghi.
