Mit dem neuen Trainer Mario Beretta, der von Ternana Calcio kam, erwischte der Klub zunächst einen guten Start und war zwischenzeitlich Dritter hinter Juventus Turin und AC Mailand, bevor die Mannschaft nach und nach an Profil verlor und schließlich im Abstiegskampf landete. Drei Spieltage vor Schluss befand sich Chievo auf dem 18. Tabellenplatz, einem Abstiegsplatz. Beretta wurde entlassen und durch den Interimstrainer Maurizio D’Angelo, einem ehemaligen Spieler von Chievo, ersetzt.

Mario Beretta, a Serie A novice from Ternana, was named the coach but, after a strong start that brought Chievo to third behind Juventus and Milan, the team slowly lost position in the league table. With three matches remaining in the season, Chievo was third-from-last, a position which would see it relegated to Serie B. As a last resort, Beretta was fired and Maurizio D'Angelo, a former Chievo player, was appointed temporarily to replace him as coach.
