Les chromatophores matures sont regroupés en sous-classes selon la couleur (ou plutôt la « teinte ») qu'ils possèdent quand ils sont éclairés par de la lumière blanche : xanthophores (jaune), érythrophores (rouge), iridophores (réfléchissant / iridescent), leucophores (blanc), mélanophores (noir ou brun) et cyanophores (bleu).
