ولقد اضطُلع بعمل كبير من أجل إبراز موضوع المحيطات والسواحل والجزر على الساحة السياسية في عملية مؤتمر القمة وفي مؤتمر القمة ذاته، حيث دارت مناقشات بشأن قضايا تتصل ببناء القدرات والاستخدام المستدام للموارد البحرية الحية والمحافظة عليها والتلوث البحري وحماية وإدارة المناطق الساحلية والنظم الإيكولوجية والعلوم البحرية وضرورة تحسين التنسيق والتعاون فيما بين الحكومات والمنظمات الدولية والإقليمية

Significant work had been undertaken to give oceans, coasts and islands a higher political profile in the Summit process and at the Summit itself, with discussions on issues related to capacity-building, the sustainable use and conservation of marine living resources, marine pollution, the protection and management of coastal zones and marine ecosystems, ocean science and the need for better coordination and cooperation among Governments and international and regional organizations
