It was first presented to the playoff champion of the NHL (replacing the O'Brien Trophy) who then went on to face the Western Hockey League (WHL) champion for the Stanley Cup.[2] After the WHL folded and the Stanley Cup was awarded only to the NHL playoff champion, the Prince of Wales Trophy was awarded to the regular season champion.

Prince of Wales Trophy jaettiin alun perin Montreal Canadiensin ja New York Americansin välisen ottelun voittajalle 15. joulukuuta 1925.[1] Seuraavalla kaudella palkinto jaettiin NHL:n pudotuspelien voittajalle, joka kohtaisi Western Canada Hockey Leaguen voittajan Stanley Cup -otteluissa.[4] Vuosina 1928–1938 palkinto myönnettiin NHL:n Amerikan divisioonan voittajalle. Kun Amerikan divisioona kuitenkin poistettiin käytöstä, alettiin palkintoa myöntää koko runkosarjan voittajalle.
