After being the top goalscorer at Democrata (14 goals in only 16 games), Bernard returned to Atlético. Despite being young enough to play in Copa São Paulo de Juniores, he was called up by the manager Dorival Júnior to play for first team.[9] He made his debut with the club in the match against Uberaba, on 23 March 2011, playing in the right back position due to the squad's injury crisis at the time.[10][11] He then returned to youth squads, scoring the winning goal of the Taça Belo Horizonte de Juniores.

In 2006 kwam Bernard in de jeugdopleiding van Atlético Mineiro terecht. Vier jaar later werd hij uitgeleend aan Democrata FC. Daar maakte hij 14 doelpunten in 16 wedstrijden en vervolgens keerde hij terug naar Atlético Mineiro, waar hij in het eerste elftal terechtkwam.[2] Op 23 maart 2011 maakte hij zijn debuut voor Atlético tegen Uberaba (1–1), toen hij als rechtsback moest spelen door personele problemen.[3]
