Apenas un año y medio después de haber estado internado en un psiquiátrico, la Federación Argentina (AFA) le ofrecía el cargo de entrenador, a fines de 2008, ante la renuncia de Alfio Basile (su hijo llegó a decir semanas antes del Mundial, que Maradona había conspirado para sacarlo del cargo y poder reemplazarlo) a sabiendas de que ese lugar le correspondía, con creces, a Carlos Bianchi, cuatro veces campeón de la Copa Libertadores de América y tres, de la Copa prefirió darle el cargo al ídolo, con las consecuencias que esto trajo.
