During the 1980s, several thrash metal bands formed a prototype for black metal. This so-called "first wave" included bands such as Venom, Bathory, Hellhammer and Celtic Frost.[1] A "second wave" arose in the early 1990s, spearheaded by Norwegian bands such as Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone, Immortal and Emperor.

Black metalin ensimmäinen aalto syntyi 1980-luvun alun thrash metal -yhtyeistä, ja sen merkittäviä edelläkävijöitä olivat Venom, Bathory, Mercyful Fate ja Celtic Frost.[1] Toinen aalto kehittyi 1980-luvun lopussa ja 1990-luvun alussa pohjoismaissa, erityisesti Norjassa, missä Burzum, Mayhem, Darkthrone, Emperor[2] ja Dimmu Borgir[1] nousivat suuremman yleisön tietoisuuteen.
