One of the older spellings of the name of the saint is ‘Berriona’. Is it possible that this derives from the Latin for Ireland, used by St Patrick in the 5th century, ‘Hiberione’? This gives us ‘hiberiona’, or ‘an Irishwoman’. In Cornish, this becomes ‘Berrion’ or ‘Beryon’. Was this what the local people called her, ‘Beryon’, ‘the Irish Lady’?
