Das Land Berlin führt eine umfassende Neustrukturierung des Sekundarschulwesens durch, die auch eine Neugestaltung des Übergangsverfahrens von der Grundschule in die weiterführenden Schulen umfasst. So stehen für den Übergang in Berlin seit Beginn des Schuljahres 2010/2011 nur noch zwei Schulformen zur Auswahl: das Gymnasium und die neu eingeführte Integrierte Sekundarschule (ISS), die die bisherigen Haupt-, Real- und Gesamtschulen (sowie verbundene Haupt- und Realschulen) in sich vereint und alle Schulabschlüsse bis zum Abitur anbietet.

The Federal State of Berlin is currently restructuring the secondary school system. The new structure includes a reorganization of the transition process from primary to secondary school. Since the school year 2010/2011, the number of secondary school tracks has been reduced to two: the Gymnasium (academic track) and the newly introduced Integrierte Sekundarschule (ISS; integrated secondary school).
