Los más recientes conflictos sociales encuentran génesis en la actitud intransigente del gobierno de negarse a encarar la crisis aumentando el salario mínimo a la par con la inflación mientras los precios de la canasta familiar van en aumento. A esto se agrega la pérdida de empleos en la industria textil (zonas francas) en el Cibao lo que afecta la economía informal; y despidos masivos en la estatal Corporación Dominicana de Electricidad así como en las escuelas públicas.
